Type species. Mutilla guineensis Fabricius, 1793 (female), by original designation.

Taxonomic history. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by André, 1901b: 338. Reinstated to generic status by André, 1902c: 30. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and identified (as Dolichomutilla simillima Bischoff, 1920: 328 ) by Nonveiller, 1996b: 33 (the male described as that of the type species by Bischoff, 1920: 323 was misidentified according to Nonveiller, 1996b: 33).
