Type species. Mutilla bucephalus Smith, 1855 (female), by original designation (as Mutilla pertyi Dalla Torre, 1897 , unnecessary replacement name for Mutilla bucephalus Smith, 1855 not Mutilla bucephala Perty, 1833 ). ( Smith, 1855: 53 described “262. Mutilla bucephalus ” immediately below the entry for “261. Mutilla bucephala ” Perty. This indicates that Smith’s name was not proposed as an adjective with an erroneous suffix but is rather a noun, and therefore not a homonym of M. bucephala ; Smith’s name is thus valid.)

Sex association. The male of the type species has not been recognized; the males of other species were associated and described by Mickel, 1939: 331.
