Type species. Agama imperialis Blake, 1871 (male), by subsequent designation of Ashmead, 1899: 60. The later designation of Agama mendica Blake, 1871 by André, 1904a: 32 is invalid.

Taxonomic history. New name for Agama Blake, 1871 not Daudin, 1802. Junior subjective synonym of Sphaeropthalma Blake, 1871 according to Fox, 1894b: 293, 1894c: 296. Junior synonym of Agama Blake, 1871 (as subgenus of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) according to Dalla Torre, 1897: 5. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to Fox, 1898: 14. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1899: 56. Junior subjective synonym of Ephuta Say, 1836 according to André, 1902c: 51. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1903: 306. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Sphaeropthalma, Blake, 1871 ) by Schuster, 1958: 21. Junior subjective synonym of Sphaeropthalma Blake, 1871 according to Pitts et al., 2004: 224. Subjectively invalid name.

Sex association. The female of the type species has not been recognized; the presumed female was associated and described (in a key to genera) by Ashmead, 1899: 56.
