Type species. Mimecomutilla renominanda Bischoff, 1921 (female), designated by ICZN, 1973: 82 according to application of Brothers, 1970: 115 . (Ashmead, 1903, had designated Mutilla purpurata Smith, 1879 based on a misidentification of this species by Péringuey, 1898: 40, 60; 1899: pl. VIII, 451. See Brothers 1998: 443 for discussion of type specimens for M. renominanda .)
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to Bradley & Bequaert, 1923: 228 (who considered Ashmead’s type designation valid although based on a misidentification). Mimecomutilla sensu Bischoff, 1921 (= current concept) junior subjective synonym of Smicromyrme Thomson, 1870 according to Bradley & Bequaert, 1923: 228. Resurrected as distinct taxon by Brothers, 1970: 118 . Valid generic name.
Sex association. The male of the type species was illustrated by Péringuey, 1899: pl. VIII, fig. 14 and both sexes were described by Bischoff, 1921: 501, 508.
Distribution. Afrotropical.
