Gender. Feminine.
Type species. Mutilla argentata Villers, 1789 (female; neotype male designated by Petersen, 1988: 175), by original designation.
Taxonomic history. Raised to generic status by Ashmead, 1899: 56. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by André, 1903: 420. Reinstated to generic status by André, 1902c: 67 (MS completed after that for André, 1903). Senior subjective synonym of Xenomutilla Ashmead, 1903 . Valid generic name.
Sex association. The male of the type species (misidentified as Mutilla hottentotta Fabricius, 1804 ) was associated and identified (as Mutilla rondanii Spinola, 1843: 133 ) by Sichel & Radoszkowski, 1870: 191; both sexes were redescribed by Petersen, 1988: 174.
Distribution. Afrotropical, Palaearctic.
