Type species. Mutilla dubitata Smith, 1855 (female), by original designation.
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to André, 1902c: 32. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1903: 326. Valid generic name.
Sex association. The male of the type species has not been recognized; the presumed male was associated and described (for the genus) by Ashmead, 1899: 58.
Distribution. Neotropical, Nearctic.
