Gender. Masculine.
Type species. Mutilla pedunculata Klug, 1829 (male), by subsequent designation of Ashmead, 1903: 305 (junior subjective synonym of Mutilla semistriata Klug, 1829 (female) according to André, 1910: 32).
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Agama Blake, 1871 (as subgenus of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) according to Dalla Torre, 1897: 5. Resurrected to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by Magretti, 1898: 42. Reinstated to generic status by Ashmead, 1899: 56. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by André, 1901a: 167. Reinstated to generic status by André, 1902c: 20. Valid generic name. Sex association. The female of the type species was associated and identified (as Mutilla semistriata Klug, 1829 : tab. 4, fig. 9) by André, 1910: 32, but the association may be incorrect; the first female associated for another species was described by Radoszkowski, 1887: 99.
Distribution. Afrotropical, Palaearctic, Oriental.
