Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to André, 1902c: 32. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1903: 326. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Smicromyrme Thomson, 1870 ) by Bradley & Bequaert, 1923: 229. Transferred with subgeneric status (to Timulla Ashmead, 1899 ) by Mickel, 1933: 388. Reinstated to generic status by Skorikov, 1935: 311. Junior subjective synonym of Timulla Ashmead, 1899 according to Brothers, 1975: 592 . Resurrected to generic status by Nonveiller in FAO, 1975: 171 and Lelej, 1978: 72. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The probable female of the type species was associated, identified (as Trogaspidia guessfeldti Bischoff, 1920: 373 ) and redescribed by Nonveiller, 1980b: 88 (the associations and descriptions by Bingham, 1912: 531 and (as Mutilla aestuans Gerstaecker, 1857 ) by Bischoff, 1920: 372 were erroneous according to Nonveiller, 1980b: 86).
