Gender. Feminine.
Type species. Photopsis cressonii Fox, 1890 (male), by original designation (junior synonym of Mutilla frigida Smith, 1855 (female), according to Mickel, 1935b: 388 read with Mickel, 1924: 9). The later designation of Mutilla (Sphaeropthalma) canadensis Blake, 1871 (female) by André, 1902c: 28 is invalid.
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to Fox, 1898: 14. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1899: 55. Senior subjective synonym of Nomiaephagus Ashmead, 1899 , Sphinctomutilla André, 1908 and Sphinctopsis Mickel, 1928 . Valid generic name.
Sex association. The female of the type species was identified (as Mutilla (Sphaeropthalma) canadensis Blake, 1871: 252 ) and associated by Fox, 1899: 224.
Distribution. Nearctic, Neotropical.
