Pycnomutilla André, 1902c . Gen. Ins. 11: 51. Female, male.
Gender. Feminine.
Type species. Mutilla (Sphaeropthalma) waco Blake, 1871 (female), by subsequent designation of Ashmead, 1904: 8.
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Ephuta Say, 1836 according to André, 1902c: 51. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1904: 8. Junior (actually senior) subjective synonym of Bruesia Ashmead, 1903 according to Bradley, 1916: 191. Junior subjective synonym of Dasymutilla Ashmead, 1899 according to Mickel, 1928: 43. (Although André, 1902c: 51 merely included “ Pycnomutilla . Ashmead, in litt.” as a synonym of Ephuta, Ashmead, 1904: 8 proposed it as a supposed new genus. Articles 11.5, 11.6.1 and 67.12 of the Code determine that it is an available name, attributed to André, 1902 rather than Ashmead, 1904, and with its type as specified by Ashmead, 1904: 8, the first author subsequently to designate one of the 545 originally included species as the type.) Subjectively invalid name.
Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and described by Fox, 1899: 229.
Distribution. Nearctic.
