Type species. Ronisia torosa Costa, 1858 (male), by monotypy (junior synonym of Mutilla brutia Petagna, 1787 (female), according to Dalla Torre, 1897: 18, confirmed by Brothers, 1983b: 326 ).
Taxonomic history. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by Dalla Torre, 1897: 5. Reinstated to generic status by Ashmead, 1899: 54. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to André, 1902c: 32. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1903: 327. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by Suárez, 1969: 133. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to Brothers, 1975: 592 . Resurrected to generic status by Nonveiller, 1975: 167, 1980a: 61. Senior subjective synonym of Pycnotilla Bischoff, 1920 and Paralletilla Pagliano, 2005 . Valid generic name.
Sex association. The female of the type species was associated and identified (as Mutilla brutia Petagna, 1787: 33 ) by Dalla Torre, 1897: 17.
Distribution. Afrotropical, Palaearctic.
