Smicromyrme Thomson, 1870 . Opusc. Ent. 2: 208. Female, male.
Gender. Masculine (Article 30.2.4 of the Code).
Type species. Mutilla rufipes Fabricius, 1787 (female), by monotypy (attributed to Latreille, 1792).
Taxonomic history. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by Dalla Torre, 1897: 5. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to André, 1902c: 32. Resurrected to generic status by Ashmead, 1903: 326. Valid generic name.
Sex association. The male of the type species was associated although misidentified (as Mutilla ephippium Fabricius, 1793 ) by Spinola, 1806: 156 (the first published association, by Latreille, 1792: 9, was apparently incorrect) and repeatedly been described although misidentified; Petersen, 1988: 160, 186, 188, 189 has clarified this.
Distribution. Palaearctic, Afrotropical, Oriental.
