7. Myrcia hatschbachii D. Legrand (1961: 293) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Paraná: Curitiba, Caixa de Água Nova , 21 December 1943 (fl.), Hatschbach 79 (holotype MVM! [image], isotypes MBM!, RB!) ( Figures 21A–E View FIGURE 21 , 22 View FIGURE 22 , 23 View FIGURE 23 ) .

Description:— Shrub to tree, 2.5 to 25 m high. Trichome reddish, simple or dibrachiate, 0.1–0.4 mm. Twig when young flattened, tomentose, pubescent to puberulent, when mature greyish (when dry), cylindrical, cortex slightly cracked; branching monopodial or sympodial, internode 2.0– 5.2 cm, node slender; cataphylls present (usually in sympodial branching), early deciduous; buds tomentose or pubescent. Leaf concolorous, chartaceous, blade 3.8–13.1 × 1.8–5.3 cm, narrowly elliptic to elliptic or obovate, apex acuminate to acute or caudate, base cuneate to obtuse, margin plane, secondary veins 3–8 mm apart, held at an angle of 60–85° relative to the midvein, marginal vein 1 mm from the margin, tertiary veins conspicuous in both surfaces, areoles 0.5–1.0 mm, pellucid dots inconspicuous in the abaxial surface, 2–7 per mm 2; adaxial surface subglabrate to glabrous (except midvein), secondary veins raised; abaxial surface puberulent, secondary veins raised; petiole 3–8 × 1–2 mm, canaliculate, tomentose or puberulent. Inflorescence ferrugineous in the rachis (due to trichomes), 5.0–11.5 × 3.0–8.0 cm, 23–+100 flowers, axillar at the terminal or subterminal nodes of the SGU (central bud developing a vegetative branch), usually only one pair per SGU, one inflorescence per axillary bud, inflorescence pherophyll usually deciduous, opposite branching, three to five branching per node, rachis tomentose or pubescent to puberulent, first internode of central rachis 1 mm wide; bracts not seen, probably deciduous; bracteoles 0.4–0.6 × 0.2–0.4 mm, deciduous, lanceolate or ovate, plane, apex acuminate, base truncate, both surfaces puberulent. Flower bud 2–3 × 1–2 mm, turbinate, corolla apparent before anthesis; hypanthium 0.8–1.6 mm extending above the summit of the ovary, not tearing at anthesis, externally pubescent to puberulent, pellucid dots covering the whole surface or inconspicuous; calyx 4–5–merous, lobes 0.4–1.4 × 0.6–1.4 mm, not fused, deciduous parallel to the hypanthium ring, depressed ovate to widely depressed ovate, concave, apex rounded, both surfaces puberulent; corolla 4–5–merous, petals cream to white, 0.8–1.6 × 0.8–1.6 mm, very widely ovate, plane, apex rounded, externally puberulent to glabrous, internally subglabrate to glabrous; staminal ring 0.2–0.4 mm wide, glabrous, stamens 50–80, filament 0.8–4.0 mm long, anther 0.24–0.32 × 0.24–0.40 mm, gland at the apex; ovary 0.6–0.8 × 0.8–1.0 mm, obconic, style 4.0– 4.8 mm long, glabrous, stigma capitate. Fruit mature purple, ca. 0.5 × 0.5 cm, globose, base rounded, subglabrate, totally covered by pellucid dots, remnants of hypanthium and calyx present; seeds 1–3 per fruit.

Distribution and Habitat: — Myrcia hatschbachii is found in the subtropical regions of the Atlantic Forest domain, specifically in Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states ( Figure 23 View FIGURE 23 ). The species inhabits various vegetation types, including subtropical (Araucaria) forests, riparian forests, and forest patches within montane grasslands (locally known as “faxinal”); it can even be found in areas of human disturbed vegetation. It occurs at elevations ranging from 112 to 1,160 meters, though it is typically found above 500 meters. The species occasionally forms dense population.

Phenology: —Flowering has been recorded from September to March, peaking between November and January. Fruits are present from November to April, with mature fruits observed in December and January.

Conservation Status: — Myrcia hatschbachii has a wide distribution area (Extent of Occurrence is 123,005 km 2, threshold of Least Concern; sensu IUCN 2022), is recorded in protected areas and is generally common across its range. The small Area of Occupancy (232 km 2, threshold of Endangered) may reflect limited collection effort rather than an actual restricted distribution. Based on these factors, the species is preliminarily classified as Least Concern (LC; IUCN 2022).

Taxonomy: — Myrcia hatschbachii is one of the four species of Myrcia sect. Eugeniopsis with a distinctive open flower bud, revealing the corolla prior to anthesis (the other being Myrcia advena , Myrcia oblongata and Myrcia tenuivenosa ). This feature has historically kept these species within Myrcia rather than Eugeniopsis of Marlierea . Beyond flower bud morphology, the species is characterized by either monopodial or sympodial branching, elliptic or obovate leaf blades with raised secondary and tertiary veins on both surfaces, inflorescence that emerge from the axils of terminal or subterminal nodes of the SGU, turbinate flower bud, and flower 4–5–merous with a capitate stigma ( Figure 21A–E View FIGURE 21 ). Local names in Paraná state include “caingá”, “caingá-vermelha”.
