Description:— Shrub to tree, 1 to 10 m high. Trichome cream to ochraceous, simple or dibrachiate, 0.08–0.32 mm. Twig when young flattened, pubescent to glabrous, when mature greyish (when dry), cylindrical, cortex slightly cracked; branching monopodial, internode 1.2–5.8 cm, node slender; cataphylls sometimes present, early deciduous; buds pubescent to puberulent. Leaf usually discolorous, adaxially green and abaxially glaucous, chartaceous, blade 2.2–10.6 × 0.8–3.3 cm, narrowly elliptic to elliptic, oblong, ovate or obovate, apex acuminate to rounded, base narrowly cuneate to rounded, margin plane, secondary veins 0.5–6.0 mm apart, held at an angle of 60–85° relative to the midvein, marginal vein 0.5–1.5 mm from the margin (rarely with two marginal veins), tertiary veins usually inconspicuous in both surfaces, areoles 0.5–1.5 mm, pellucid dots conspicuous to inconspicuous in the abaxial surface, 9–22 per mm 2; adaxial surface puberulent to glabrous, secondary veins plane; abaxial surface pubescent to puberulent, secondary veins plane to raised; petiole 2–9 × 1–2 mm, canaliculate, pubescent to glabrous. Inflorescence 4.0–13.8 × 2.0–10.0 cm, 7–112 flowers, axillar at the subterminal (rarely terminal) nodes of the SGU (central bud developing a vegetative branch), one inflorescence per axillary bud, inflorescence pherophyll persistent or deciduous, branching opposite at the base and usually subopposite at apical nodes, two to three (rarely five) branching per node, rachis puberulent to glabrous, first internode of central rachis 1–2 mm wide; bracts 1.8–4.0 × 0.5–1.7 mm, deciduous, narrowly elliptic or lanceolate to ovate, concave to plane or keeled, apex acuminate to rounded, base cuneate or truncate, both surfaces puberulent to glabrous; bracteoles 0.6–1.0 × 0.2–0.5 mm, deciduous, ovate, concave or keeled, apex acuminate to acute, base truncate, externally puberulent to glabrous, internally puberulent. Flower bud 1.8–3.2 × 1.0– 2.5 mm, obovate, corolla apparent before anthesis; hypanthium 0.8–1.2 mm extending above the summit of the ovary, not tearing at anthesis, externally subglabrate to glabrous, pellucid dots covering the whole surface; calyx 4–5–merous (fifth lobe petaloid), 0.4–1.2 × 0.8–2.6 mm, not fused, persistent, depressed ovate to widely depressed ovate or ovate, concave, apex obtuse to rounded, externally puberulent to glabrous, internally puberulent to subglabrate; corolla 4– 5–merous, petals white, 0.8–2.0 × 0.4–2.0 mm, depressed ovate to widely depressed ovate, very widely ovate or very widely obovate, plane to concave, apex rounded, both surfaces puberulent to glabrous; staminal ring 0.2–0.4 mm wide, puberulent to glabrous, stamens 41–83, filament 1.8–5.8 mm long, anther 0.16–0.40 × 0.16–0.40 mm, gland at the apex; ovary 0.6–1.0 × 0.6–1.0 mm, obconic, style 4.0– 7.6 mm long, glabrous, stigma punctiform. Fruit immature green, mature black, ca. 0.6 × 0.6 cm, globose, base rounded, glabrous, totally covered by pellucid dots, hypanthium and calyx accrescent; seeds 1 or 2 per fruit.

Distribution and Habitat: —The distribution of Myrcia oblongata is concentrated in the subtropical regions of the Atlantic Forest domain, occurring in southern Brazil, Argentina (Corrientes and Misiones provinces), and Paraguay (Amabay and Itapúa departments) ( Figure 28 ). Its range also extends to mountain rainforest in southeastern Brazil. The species inhabits diverse vegetation types, including subtropical (Araucaria) forest, riparian forests, forest patches within montane grasslands (locally called “faxinal”), marshes (“charcos”), grassland, rocky outcrops, and rarely cerrado. The species is occasionally found forming dense population and is recorded at elevations ranging from 100 to 1,209 meters.

Phenology: —Flowering occurs throughout the year, except March and July, with peak flowering from December to January. Fruiting is observed year round (except August and November), with mature fruits predominantly recorded from January to April.

Conservation Status: — Myrcia oblongata has an extensive distribution area, with an Extent of Occurrence of 987,459 km 2, meeting the threshold of Least Concern ( IUCN 2022). The species is recorded within protected areas and is typically common throughout its range, as indicated by numerous records, and can be found even in small and disturbed fragments. Its relatively small Area of Occupancy (432 km 2, threshold of Endangered) is likely due to limited collection efforts. Based on available data, M. oblongata is preliminarily classified as Least Concern (LC; IUCN 2022).

Taxonomy: —The species is the most distinctive species within Myrcia sect. Eugeniopsis , possessing several unique traits rarely found in other species in the group as its shrub (to tree) habit, cream to ochraceous trichomes (instead of reddish), inflorescence with subopposite apical branching (vs. opposite), obovate flower buds with exposed corolla (vs. barely visible), and fruit with accrescent calyx (vs. deciduous) ( Figure 21F–H ). Additional diagnostic features include monopodial branching, leaf blades with non-elongated (acuminate to rounded) apices, a typically glaucous abaxial leaf surface, inflorescences emerging from numerous subterminal nodes on the SGU, and flower 4-5-merous. The glaucous abaxial surface is usually absent in specimens from southeastern Brazil, which also tend to have bigger leaf blades. Myrcia oblongata forms a clade with two other species that exhibit open flower buds ( M. hatschbachii and M. tenuivenosa ); Myrcia advena is yet to be sampled ( Santos et al. 2017). The species in known by various vernacular names across its range, including “carvãozinho” (Minas Gerais state), “capoeira-branca” (Paraná state), “guamirim-do-campo” (Santa Catarina state), “guamirim-preto” (Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul states), and “guamirim” (Rio Grande do Sul state).
