Description:— Shrub to tree, 0.5 to 20(25) m high. Trichome reddish, simple or dibrachiate (rarely stellate), 0.08– 0.80 mm. Twig when young flattened, tomentose or puberulent, when mature greyish or stramineous (when dry), cylindrical, cortex slightly cracked; branching monopodial (rarely sympodial), internode 1.0–8.0 cm, node slender; cataphylls absent or present, scale-like or foliaceous, deciduous; buds tomentose or pubescent. Leaf concolorous or discolorous, adaxially green and abaxially ferrugineous (due to trichomes), chartaceous or coriaceous, blade (2.5)4.3– 12.5 × (0.8) 1.7–5.2 cm, narrowly to widely elliptic or lanceolate to widely ovate, apex acuminate to rounded or sometimes caudate, base narrowly cuneate to rounded, often truncate or attenuate, margin plane, secondary veins 1–7 mm apart, held at an angle of 50–85° relative to the midvein, marginal vein 0.5–2.0 mm from the margin (rarely with two marginal veins), tertiary veins barely conspicuous to inconspicuous in both surfaces, areoles 0.3–3.0 mm, pellucid dots usually conspicuous in the abaxial surface, 2–21 per mm 2; adaxial surface puberulent to glabrous, secondary veins plane to barely raised; abaxial surface tomentose, puberulent or glabrous, secondary veins plane to barely raised; petiole 1–14 × 1–3 mm, canaliculate, tomentose, puberulent or glabrous. Inflorescence ochraceous to ferrugineous in the rachis (due to trichomes), 0.8–11.0 × 0.5–6.5 cm, 5–65 flowers, axillar at the terminal or subterminal nodes of the SGU (central bud developing a vegetative branch) or often at nodes from the previous SGU or rarely at terminal bud, usually a pair arising in a short internode with abortive central bud, inflorescence pherophyll persistent or deciduous, opposite branching (rarely subopposite), three (often 2–5) branching per node, rachis tomentose or puberulent, first internode of central rachis 1.0– 2.5 mm wide; bracts 1.2–3.2 × 0.8–3.0 mm, deciduous, lanceolate to very widely ovate, plane to concave or keeled, apex acuminate to rounded, base truncate, both surfaces puberulent; bracteoles 0.8–1.6 × 0.2–0.8 mm, deciduous, lanceolate to widely ovate, concave to plane or keeled, apex acuminate to rounded, base rounded or truncate, external surface puberulent to glabrous, internally puberulent to subglabrate. Flower bud 1.6–3.2 × 1.2–2.4 mm, clavate, corolla hidden or barely apparent before anthesis; hypanthium 0.8–1.2 mm extending above the summit of the ovary, not tearing at anthesis or with a small vertical rip (but not tearing the staminal ring), externally tomentose or pubescent to puberulent, pellucid dots covering the whole surface (but sometimes covered by the indument); calyx 4–(5)–merous, lobes 0.4–1.6 × 0.6–1.8 mm, not fused, deciduous parallel to the hypanthium ring, depressed ovate to widely depressed ovate, concave, apex rounded, externally tomentose or pubescent to puberulent, internally puberulent; corolla 4–5–merous, petals cream to white, 0.8–2.0 × 0.8–2.2 mm, widely depressed ovate, very widely ovate or very widely obovate, plane (often concave), apex rounded, both surfaces puberulent to glabrous; staminal ring 0.2–0.5 mm wide, puberulent, stamens 40–74, filament 1.2–5.2 mm long, anther 0.16–0.32 × 0.24–0.32 mm, gland at the apex; ovary 0.4–1.0 × 0.4–1.0 mm, obconic, style 3.6–5.6 mm long, glabrous (rarely with trichomes), stigma punctiform (rarely slightly swollen). Fruit mature reddish to vinaceous or black, sometimes with reddish trichomes, 0.4–1.5 × 0.4–1.0 cm, globose, base rounded or often obconic, glabrescent to glabrous, totally covered by pellucid dots, remnants of hypanthium and calyx present; seeds 1 (rarely 2 or 3) per fruit.

Distribution and Habitat: —The core distribution of Myrcia clausseniana spans the Espinhaço range, from southern part plus the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (Minas Gerais state) to the Chapada Diamantina (Bahia state) ( Figure 10 View FIGURE 10 ). The species also occurs in mountain areas of the Serra da Mantiqueira (Rio de Janeiro State) and in the region of Santa Teresa municipality. It usually inhabits forest areas (including riparian zones) inside the Campo Rupestre, and it is also found in quartzitic rocky outcrops, Canga, Caatinga, Cerrado (across various physiognomies), and rainforest. Myrcia clausseniana usually grows at the forest edge but can also be found beneath the canopy. The elevation range for the species is from 660 to 1650 meters.

Phenology: —Flowering specimens were collected in March and from May to December, with flowering peak occurring between July and October. Fruit were observed from January to May, July and from September to December (mature fruits recorded in January, November and December).

Conservation Status: — Myrcia clausseniana has a wide distribution across various types of vegetation (Extent of Occurrence ca. 449,581 km 2, threshold of Least Concern; sensu IUCN 2022), is found in protected areas and has been recently collected from multiple localities. The area of occupancy (488 km 2, threshold of Endangered) is small, likely due to low collection density. Based on this context, Myrcia clausseniana is preliminarily considered to be of Least Concern (LC; IUCN 2022).

Taxonomy:— The species is characterized by monopodial branching, leaves typically elliptic to ovate with acuminate or caudate apices, inflorescence arising at the SGU of the current or previous season and usually with a short internode with a pair of inflorescences and an aborted central bud, and a small mature fruit (relative to the average size in the group). Myrcia clausseniana is well characterized despite the wide geographic distribution and corresponding morphological variation. The species exhibits considerable variation in indument density, ranging from tomentose (previously correlated to Marlierea clausseniana – Figure 7 View FIGURE 7 ) to glabrous in leaves and branches ( Figure 5 View FIGURE 5 ). Leaf form also shows relevant variation ( Figures 7 View FIGURE 7 and 8 View FIGURE 8 ). Specimens from rainforest areas in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states exhibit atypical fruit (large and obconic) ( Braga 2925, Demuner 325, Hatschbach 71477, Kollmann 1624, 2450, Lombardi 5923) ( Figure 9 View FIGURE 9 ). Additionally, some specimens from Minas Gerais state are confused with inland specimens of Myrcia polygama due to their long acuminate leaf apices (Krieger 9217, 10894). In this case, the morphology of the inflorescence and flower bud support their inclusion in M. clausseniana , but further studies may be necessary to clarify the relationship between these specimens and the two species.
