Range: Cuba; Panama to Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, and along the Andes to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC); central and southeastern Brazil.
Ecology: —Locally abundant; in forests, clearings, and along roadsides, often forming large, pure colonies but also mixed within other shrubby vegetation; (325) 750–2750 m.
