Definition. Unarmoured spongiids, not heavily lacunose, with simple primary fibers ( Cook & Bergquist 2002: 1052).

Type species. Spongia (Spongia) officinalis Linnaeus, 1759 View in CoL ( Linnaeus 1759: 1119; as Spongia officinalis View in CoL ).

Type locality. Mediterranean ( Cook & Bergquist 2002: 1054).
