Type genus. Caliscelis de Laporte, 1833 View in CoL , by original designation.

Description. Body from small to large, 2–16 mm typically. Divided into brachypterous form and macropterous form usually. Brachypterous form: forewing rather short and broad, reaching middle abdominal segment, veins obscure; hindwing absent. Macropterous form: forewing subhyaline, relatively narrow, parallel-sided, veins distinct, claval suture present; hindwing hyaline, with two or three lobes, longer than half length of forewing. The hindwing are characterized by the presence of transverse veins between R and M and between M and CuA, a marginal cleft between the branches of CuA in Augilini . Vertex wide and short usually, some species vertex with anterior margin strongly protruding beyond the eyes, sometimes with an elongated protuberance in the anterior margin of the vertex. Pronotum broad in the middle, narrow at the sides. Mesonotum broad, shorter in middle line than vertex and pronotum combined. Legs relatively long, fore femora and tibiae usually cylindrical, with some species flattened, hind tibia with single lateral spine medially.

Male genitalia. Anal section and genital styles usually symmetry.Aedeagus well developed in Ommatidiotinae , more or less reduced in Caliscelinae .

Female genitalia. Abdominal sternite VII in ventral view symmetrical, sometimes behind the posterior margin with small ossification flakes. Gonapophysis VIII (first valvula) elongate, with three to nine spines at apical margin. Gonapophysis IX (second valvula) with two symmetrical lobes, each lobe with many spines at apical margin and dorsal margin. Gonoplac (third valvula) with outer surface shagreen; in lateral view with median portion broad, large.
