Symplanella unipuncta Zhang & Wang, 2009 View in CoL
( Figures 69–71 View FIGURE 69 View FIGURE 70 View FIGURE 71 , 72A, B View FIGURE 72 )
Symplanella unipuncta Zhang & Wang, 2009: 177 View in CoL ; Chen, Zhang & Chang, 2014: 176; Zhang et al., 2020: 163.
Description. Measurements. Body length including forewing: male 5.5–5.6 mm (N = 7), female 4.4–4.6 mm (N = 7); forewing length: male 4.7–5.0 mm (N = 7), female 5.3–5.4 mm (N = 7).
Coloration. Body mainly yellowish-brown. Second segment of antenna with a black transverse spot near apex. Eyes taupe, ocelli orange red. Legs yellow with somewhat green. Forewing hyaline, veins yellow.
Head and thorax. Width of vertex including eyes as wide as pronotum. Vertex narrower in middle line than broad at widest part (0.6:1), anterior margin slightly convex, posterior margin angularly concave, disc depressed. Frons 1.3 times longer in middle line than widest part, 3-carinate. Clypeus with median carina. Rostrum reaching posterior trochanters. Pronotum longer in middle line than vertex (1.1:1), anterior margin angularly convex, posterior margin broadly concave. Mesonotum 1.5 times longer than pronotum and vertex combined. Forewings 4.7 times longer than wide; veins obviously forming a nodal line, ScP + R and MP with common stem; after the nodal line, RP single, MP with four branches, CuA with two branches; Pcu uniting A1 at basal 1/3 of clavus. Hind wing 2 times as long as broad at widest part, MP and CuA with two branches, RP single. Spinal formula of hind leg 6–0–0.
Male genitalia. Anal segment in dorsal view with length 0.9 times longer in middle line than widest part; apical margin roundly convex, lateral margins slightly convex; in lateral view, dorsal margin and ventral margin subparallel, ventral margin with a spine in the middle. Pygofer in lateral view with dorsal margin distinctly shorter than ventral margin, posterior margin with a large spine near the middle; in posterior view with length 2 times than widest part; in ventral view, posterior margin broadly concave in the middle, anterior margin slightly convex. Genital style in lateral view broad and rounded, dorsal half of posterior margin moundlike, covered with a lot of micro teeth; in posterior view short and stout, mostly rounded. Aedeagus in ventral view with base broad, apical 3/4 divided into three processes, stick-like, apical margin rounded; aedeagus in lateral view with base slightly broad, apical part mostly straight and slender. Connective in lateral view narrow and slender.
Female genitalia. Anal segment in dorsal view with length in middle line as long as widest part, apical margin roundly convex; anal pore near apex; in lateral view small, dorsal margin and ventral margin slightly convex. Abdominal sternite VII in ventral view with width 1.9 times as long as length, posterior margin roundly concave, behind the posterior margin with a rhombic ossification flake. Gonapophysis VIII elongate, with eight spines at apical margin. Gonapophysis IX with two symmetrical lobes, each lobe nearly rectangle with many spines at dorsal margin, dorsal margin strongly convex, ventral margin slightly concave. Gonoplac with outer surface shagreen; in lateral view broad, nearly triangle, dorsal margin slightly concave.
Host plant. Bamboo ( Figure 72C View FIGURE 72 ).
Distribution. China (Hainan Province).
Material examined. 2♂♂ 5♀♀, China: Hainan Province, Diaoluoshan , 2009-IV-12, Xiao-Hui Hou ; 18♂♂ 30♀♀, China: Hainan Province, Bawangling , 2021-V-9, Yong-Jin Sui, Sha-Sha Lv, Feng-E Li and Lan Zhang ; 11♂♂ 9♀♀, China: Hainan Province, Bawangling , 2025-III-19, Ri-Xin Jiang, Sha-Sha Lv, Huan Zhou, Xing Yao and Bing Ren ; 5♂♂ 8♀♀, China: Hainan Province, Jianfengling , 2025-III-27, Sha-Sha Lv, Huan Zhou and Xing Yao .
Remarks. S. unipuncta Zhang & Wang, 2009 is closely related to S. brevicephala ( Chou, Yuan & Wang, 1994) but differs in: 1) frons and clypeus mostly dark brown (mostly yellowish-brown in S. brevicephala ); 2) forewing of M with four branches after nodal line (with three branches after nodal line in S. brevicephala ); 3) anal segment with ventral margin with a spine (ventral margin without a spine in S. brevicephala ).
