Hosts: Burseraceae , Sapindaceae
Specimens examined: Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, 09 April 1956, Leg. J.H. Grobler, Ac. X. 146 [ SANC]. Natal [now KwaZulu-Natal], South Africa, 1956, K.E. Schedl [ FABI] .
Notes: This species was cited as collected in South Africa by Schedl (1957a). However, in the original account, Xyleborinus saxesenii is shown as a junior synonym of X. xylographus . There has been a long history of these species being confused, originally due to a synonymy introduced by Eichhoff (1896) based on incorrectly identified specimens ( Bright 1968). Schedl later recognized these species as distinct ( Schedl1962a) and Bright (1968) designated a neotype which resolved this confusion. The material examined in SANC and FABI suggests that previous reports were of X. saxesenii and not X. xylographus . There appears to be no credible reports, that we are aware of, of X. xylographus in South Africa.
