( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 )
Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from the combination of Latin prefix “ hamat- ” (meaning hooked) and “ aculeus ” (meaning spinose) in reference to the two stout, hooked spines on the distal end of the hind tibia.
Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂: CNU-DIB-MA-2015155.
Locality and horizon. Hukawng Valley, Kachin State, Northern Myanmar; lowermost Cenomanian, mid-Cretaceous (98.79 ± 0.62 Ma).
Diagnosis. Postpedicel subtriangular; arista-like stylus about 2 times as long as postpedicel. C ending between R 4+5 and M 1; Sc incomplete, and feeble distad. Fore and mid legs unmodified; hind tibia protruding into finger-like process distally, extending to 1/3 of tarsomere I, equipped with two apical hook-like spines.
Description. Male. Body length ca. 1.82 mm ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ). Head ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 ). Eyes large, holoptic; ocellar tubercle slightly raised, with 2 long ocellar setae. Scape cylindrical, slightly longer than pedicel; pedicel subglobular, with 2 stout dorsal setae; postpedicel (0.18 mm) covered with numerous small setae; arista-like stylus two-segmented (ca. two times as long as postpedicel). Proboscis protruded, palpus rod-like, with spine-like apical seta.
Thorax ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ). Mesoscutum slightly arched; acrostichal and dorsocentral setae short and biserial, ending at one prescutellar setae; 1 postalar seta; 1 postpronotal seta; 3 long, strong notopleural setae. Scutellum subtrapezoidal, with 2 marginal setae.
Wing ( Fig. 3C, D View FIGURE 3 ). Length 1.66 mm, width 0.71 mm. C terminating at R 4+5. Sc incomplete, feeble distally. R 1 ending at approximately 2/3 length of wing; R 2+3 and R 4+5 unbranched. Crossvein r-m at 1/4 of cell dm; cell br narrow; cell bm small, subequal in length to cell cua; cell dm long and wide, emitting three veins (M 1, M 2 and M 4). M 4 approximately parallel to M 2; crossvein bm-m complete; crossvein dm-m straight; cell cua closed, rounded apically with CuA curved; crossvein m-cu short, oblique, beyond apex of cell cua. Anal lobe and alula not visible.
Legs. Fore femur with row of stout, erect dorsal setae; fore tibia with two rows of short, spine-like dorsal setae; fore tarsus with row of stout setae. Mid femur with cluster of spine-like subapical setae; mid tibia with three long, distal spine-like setae. Hind femur ( Fig. 3E View FIGURE 3 ) covered with dense irregularly long setae; tarsomere I slightly shorter than total length of tarsomeres II−V combined, with cluster of short, spine-like setae on basal third.
Abdomen. Segments 1−5 gradually narrowed, tergum and sternum with long marginal setae; sternite 6−7 with long marginal setae; sternite 8 with numerous long setae. Male terminalia ( Fig. 3F View FIGURE 3 ). Symmetrical, rotated about 45−90°; cerci terminal visible, covered with dense micro-setae; epandrium subrectangular in lateral view; surstylus perpendicular to epandrium; hypandrium long, broad at base, hypandrial prolongation curved dorsad.
Female. Unknown.
Remarks. Compared to other species of Microphorites , M. hamataculeus sp. nov. is primarily characterized by the presence of a specialized apical process on the hind tibia.
