( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 )
Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from the combination of Latin prefix “ complan -” (meaning flattened) and “- pedis ” (meaning leg) in reference to the inflated fore tarsomeres II−V.
Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂: CNU-DIB-MA-2015147. PARATYPES: 2 ♂, CNU-DIB-MA-2015148, CNU-DIB-MA-2015149. The three type specimens are preserved in a single piece of amber.
Type horizon and locality. Hukawng Valley , Kachin State, Northern Myanmar; lowermost Cenomanian, mid-Cretaceous (98.79 ± 0.62 Ma) .
Diagnosis. Arista-like stylus long, about 4 times as long as postpedicel. C ending between R 4+5 and M 1; Sc complete. Foreleg modified, mid and hind legs unmodified; fore tarsomeres II−V distinctly flattened and broad.
Description. Male. Body length 1.82−2.05 mm ( Fig. 1A–C View FIGURE 1 ). Head ( Fig. 1D View FIGURE 1 ). Eyes large, holoptic; ocellar tubercle with pair of long ocellar setae. Occiput with numerous scattered stout setae.Antenna at middle of head; scape columnar; pedicel subglobular, with ring of stout setae; postpedicel subtriangular; arista-like stylus 2-segmented; second segment stylus elongated. Proboscis retracted; palpus rod-like, with one apical seta.
Thorax ( Fig. 1B, C View FIGURE 1 ). Mesonotum distinctly arched; covered with numerous strong setae.Acrostichal setae short, biserial; dorsocentral setae uniserial, longer than acrostichal setae, ending at one prescutellar seta; 1 postpronotal seta; 2 notopleural setae; 1 postalar seta. Scutellum arched, thickened, with two pairs of scutellar setae.
Wing ( Fig. 1E, F View FIGURE 1 ). Length 1.8–2.01 mm. C ending between R 4+5 and M 1. Sc ending at proximal half of wing. R 1 reaching to C at 2/3 of wing; R 2+3 and R 4+5 unbranched. Crossvein r-m located at base of cell dm (ca. 1/4 of cell dm); cell br narrow, shorter than cell dm; cell bm approximately equal in length to cell cua; cell dm long (ca. 0.57 mm), cell dm emitting three veins (M 1, M 2 and M 4). Cell cua closed. Crossvein m-cu meeting vein CuA at apex of cell cua; crossvein bm-m complete. Anal lobe not developed; alula weakly developed, with row of setae along margin.
Legs ( Fig. 1G, H View FIGURE 1 ). Fore coxa with row of long setae; fore femur slightly swollen; fore tarsomere I longer than total length of tarsomeres II−V, tarsomeres II−V expanded. Mid tarsomere I slightly swollen on distal half. Hind femur with two rows of long setae on both sides; tibia with row of long setae at outer side.
Abdomen. Segments 1–5 approximately equal in length. Tergum with long posteromarginal setae; tergite 7 without setae, sternite 7 with long anterior setae. Sternite 8 with 6 long spine-like posterior setae. Male terminalia ( Fig. 1I View FIGURE 1 ). Symmetrical, rotated about 45−90°; cerci long, rod-like covered with long setae; epandrium subrectangular in lateral view; surstylus slender, apical, perpendicular to epandrium; hypandrium strap-like, broad at base, hypandrial prolongation strongly curved dorsad.
Female. Unknown.
Remarks. The new species is assigned to Microphorites based on the generic diagnosis provided by Grimaldi & Cumming (1999) based on Hennig (1971) and supplemented by Nel et al. (2004). It is distinct from the known species of Microphorites owing to its expanded fore tarsomeres II−V that are generally unmodified in other species.
