Type locality. Zimbabwe, Harare Metropolitan Province , Harare; as “ Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia”. Harare is the capital of Zimbabwe and lies at an average elevation of 1,461 m above mean sea level .

Remarks. Haaf (1953) described Trox instabilis from 23 individuals. We studied the entire type series, which includes the male holotype (NHMB) and 22 paratypes (7 NHMB; 1 FMNH; 2 TMSA; 4 MNHN; 1 RBINS; 4 NHRS; 1 SDEI; 1 NHMW, 1 HMNH). According to the current treatment, the original type series comprises three distinct species. Eleven paratypes belong to Phoberus instabilis revalidated and new combination, nine belong to Phoberus sulcatus (this study), and two belong to the new species described herein.
