Pholidoptera brevipes Ramme, 1939 View in CoL

Material examined. Turkey: Kırklareli, Kapaklı Köyü, Suluçayır , 19.6.1952, 1 male (leg. E. Can) (det. T. Karabağ) ( NMW) .

Remarks. A male from a new location in Turkey is given.

Genus Parapholidoptera Maran, 1953

Aparapholidoptera Çıplak, 2021 View in CoL syn. nov.

Remarks. Aparapholidoptera was established by Çıplak (in Çıplak et al. 2020: 236) for five species, which include four from the genus Parapholidoptera , P. karabagi , P. distincta , P. kosswigi , and P. ziganensis , and one from the genus Apholidoptera , namely A. pietschmanni . This new genus was characterized as follows:

1) The unique autapomorphy defining this genus is the weak tooth of male cerci located at the basal fourth [However, the inner tooth of P. salmani is not larger than that of P. karabagi . All species of Parapholidoptera have male cerci with an inner tooth located in the proximal part between the basal fifth and near the middle, which cannot be a generic characteristic], 2) Further, titillators with upright apical arms and small spines on them (curved only at apex and smooth in Aph. pietschmanni ) [The curvature of the apical arms of titillators in P. distincta and P. karabagi does not match this description, and somewhat resembles that of other Parapholidoptera species, such as P. punctifrons , P. indistincta , and P. syriaca (see Ramme 1951: 214, Fig. 52 View FIGURES 33–54. 33–46 , Stolyarov 1983: 56, Figs. 5–8 View FIGURES 1–32. 1–2 )], 3) weakly convex hind margin of pronotal disc [This is not consistent in the members of Aparapholidoptera (compare the male pronota of P. kosswigi and P. ziganensis on the OSF as well as P. karabagi , P. distincta ). In the specimens of P. distincta examined here, the hind margin of the pronotum is rounded. In contrast, P. bolkarensis and P. hepat sp. nov., etc. have a hind margin of the pronotum that is relatively less rounded than that of some other species.], 4) densely veined tegmina that extended beyond the hind margin of pronotum by half [This character is also found in members of Parapholidoptera such as P. belen and P. euxina boluensis ssp. nov., but is not present in the specimens of P. karabagi examined ( Ünal 2018).], 5) male anal tergum with two processes and a wide incision between them [This description differs from P. distincta , which has a narrow posterior incision. In contrast, P. antaliae , P. punctifrons , P. grandis , etc. have a wide incision on the male last tergite, similar to this description.], 6) the anal tergum not black, diagnose this genus from other genera of the tribe. [This is one of the main generic characters of the genus Parapholidoptera , shared by all species that lack a black last tergite.]

As mentioned in the square brackets, the proposed characteristics of Aparapholidoptera are shared by certain members of the genus Parapholidoptera , and none of them distinctly separate the genus Aparapholidoptera from Parapholidoptera . Furthermore, Apholidoptera pietschmanni lacks many of the characteristics mentioned above. Because it is undoubtedly a member of the genus Apholidoptera . In their 2022 study, Yahyaoğlu et al. (the same authors as Çıplak et al. 2020) reclassified Apholidoptera pietschmanni back to its original genus, Apholidoptera . This species had already been included in Apholidoptera based solely on morphological features by Ramme in 1951, and it has been supported by all researchers till its transfer to a wrong new genus. Fortunately, it is now classified under the correct genus. For all the reasons explained above, Aparapholidoptera is a junior synonym of Parapholidoptera .

Additionally, Yahyaoğlu et al. (2022) stated, “ Exopholidoptera is also similar to Parapholidoptera salmani for many other characters. ” However, it differs significantly from P. salmani in many aspects, including fundamental generic traits (see Ünal 2018).

Accurate morphological identification is essential for conducting a molecular study; otherwise, the results may pertain to a different species or taxon. Consequently, any analyses and taxonomic decisions based on incorrect identifications contribute to a chaotic taxonomy.
