Genus Muricopsis Bucquoy & Dautzenberg, 1882

Type species. Murex blainvillii Payraudeau, 1826 View in CoL [= Muricopsis cristata ( Brocchi, 1814) View in CoL ]; original designation by Bucquoy & Dautzenberg (1882: 16). Present-day, Mediterranean Sea.

Remarks. Middle Miocene specimens of Muricopsis from the Paratethys and the Proto-Mediterranean Sea have often been confused with the extant Muricopsis cristata ( Brocchi, 1814) , which originated during the Pliocene. In the last years it has become clear that the species concept applied since Hörnes (1853) was too broad and that additional species occurred in the European Neogene. Recently Merle et al. (2022) recognized that specimens from the Serravallian of the Karaman Basin represent a distinct species, which he described as Muricopsis landaui Merle in Merle et al. 2022. Specimens from the Badenian of the Paratethys were compared with Muricopsis dujardini Peyrot, 1938 , originally described from the Langhian of the Loire Basin, by Kovács et al. (2018) or have been listed in open nomenclature as Muricopsis cf. cristata by Merle et al. (2022). This Paratethyan species is discussed herein as Muricopsis emus ( De Gregorio, 1885) . In addition, a larger, spinose species occurred in the southern Paratethyan Basins, which is described herein as Muricopsis hystrix sp. nov. Murex holubicensis Friedberg, 1912 , placed in Muricopsis by Korobkov (1955) and Vokes (1971), was removed from this genus and was placed in Ocenebra by Harzhauser et al. (2024). Similarly, Murex (Muricidea) moravicus Hoernes & Auinger, 1885 , which was placed in Muricopsis by Kovács (2019), is excluded from Muricopsis and placed in Murexsul herein.
