Description. See Landau et al. (2007: 23).

Discussion. The name Murex jani was first used by Doderlein (1862) in a list as nomen nudum. D’Ancona (1871) provided the first illustration of this species, but erroneously identified it as Murex pseudophyllopterus Michelotti, 1847 . Michelotti’ species represents a Daphnellopsis and is unrelated with Dermomurex jani (see below in discussion on Daphnellopsis Schepman, 1913 ). Bellardi (1873) made the name Murex jani available by providing a detailed description. Therefore, the authorship has to be passed to Bellardi (1873). For further discussion see Landau et al. (2007: 23).

Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Polish-Ukrainian Fore-Carpathian Basin: Zborów (Zboriv) ( Friedberg 1912); Pannonian Basin: Letkés ( Hungary) ( Kovács et al. 2018); Bakony Mountains: Bánd ( Hungary) ( Kovács 2020); Făget Basin: CoŞteiu de Sus ( Romania) ( Kovács 2019); Dacian Basin: Yasen ( Bulgaria) (Kojumdgieva in Kojumdgieva & Strachimirov 1960).

(Proto-)Mediterranean Sea. Tortonian (Late Miocene): Po Basin: Albenga, Montegibbio, Stazzano ( Italy) ( Bellardi 1873; Montanaro 1935). Pliocene: France ( Cossmann 1903), Italy ( Cavallo & Repetto 1992, Chirli 2000), Spain ( Landau et al. 2007).

Genus Favartia Jousseaume, 1880

Type species. Murex breviculus G.B. Sowerby II, 1834 ; original designation by Jousseaume (1880: 335). Present-day, Indo-West Pacific.
