Description. Small, moderately slender shell with high spire; apical angle ~50–65°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to six convex whorls. Suture deeply incised, strongly undulating. Spire whorls indistinctly shouldered with faint IP and prominent P1–P3 on antepenultimate and penultimate whorls. Three to four delicate tertiary cords in interspaces. Axial sculpture of six to seven strongly raised, rounded, weakly scabrose varices. Last whorl attaining ~60–65% of total height, convex, with periphery mid-whorl, slightly inflated, strongly constricted below. Six to seven varices; very weak, broad intervarical ribs may occur. Varices offset by about 25–27° between whorls. P1–P6, ADP forming strong, elevated cords of equal strength, separated by wider interspaces with delicate spiral threads, giving sculpture coarsely reticulated aspect; s1 occasionally present. Fasciole very prominent, twisted, delimiting broad pseudoumbilicus. Aperture ovate. Outer lip thickened by terminal varix, somewhat alate apically in some specimens, bearing small denticles placed short distance behind peristome; series of denticles including ID, D1 to D6; ID and D1 occasional; D1 to D5 occasionally bifid. Anal canal not developed. Siphonal canal moderately short, not narrow, open, slightly bent to the left, strongly dorsally recurved. Columellar callus forming broad rim, erect at siphonal canal, adherent in parietal area. Columella smooth, strongly excavated in apical half, weakly angled at siphonal canal. Remains of intritacalx near varices.
Discussion. Dermomurex (Dermomurex) rutogus ( De Gregorio, 1885) has been confused with the Pliocene Mediterranean Dermomurex (Dermomurex) distinctus ( De Cristofori & Jan, 1832) . They differ in the more evenly rounded last whorl of Dermomurex (Dermomurex) rutogus , its periphery is placed much lower, its primaries are much stronger and more elevated, the terminal varix tends to be slightly alate adapically, the aperture is more rounded and the fasciole is much broader
Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Steinebrunn ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1885); Pannonian Basin: Letkés ( Hungary) ( Kovács et al. 2018); Bakony Mountains: Bánd ( Hungary) ( Kovács 2020); Făget Basin: CoŞteiu de Sus, Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) ( Boettger 1902; Kovács 2019); Dacian Basin: Târnene, Yasen ( Bulgaria) (Kojumdgieva in Kojumdgieva & Strachimirov 1960; Nikolov 1994).
