Type material. Lectotype (designated herein): specimen illustrated in Pusch (1837: pl. 11, fig. 27), Korytnica ( Poland); the type material is lost (article 74.4 ICZN).
Illustrated material. NHMW 1851/0010/0027, SL: 30.8 mm, MD: 18.0 mm, Mikulov ( Czech Republic), illustrated in Hörnes (1853, pl. 13, fig. 19), figs. 49A 1 –A 3. NHMW 1861/0033/0030, SL: 44.0 mm, MD: 29.6 mm, Buituri ( Romania), illustrated in Hoernes & Auinger (1882: pl. 16, fig. 18), figs. 49B 1 –B 3. NHMW 1855/0045/0409, SL: 48.3 mm, MD: 29.3 mm, Gainfarn ( Austria), figs. 49C 1 –C 3.
Revised description. Medium-sized, ovate shell; apical angle ~60–65°. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of up to five whorls. Suture superficial; shallowly undulating. Early teleoconch whorls weakly convex with faint shoulder placed mid-whorl. No axial sculpture; spiral sculpture of numerous delicate threads. Penultimate whorl with weakly swollen subsutural collar, concave subsutural ramp, angled shoulder, subcylindrical below. Shoulder with up to 14 more or less prominent rounded nodes or triangular tubercles; P1 most prominent bearing nodes, weak and poorly distinct SP, adis, IP, abis on sutural ramp. Last whorl broadly ovate, attaining ~80–83% of total height; broad subsutural collar, deeply concave subsutural ramp, angled shoulder, convex periphery, slowly contracting below. Entire shell with delicate secondary cords (adis, abis, s1–s6) overrun by delicate tertiary threads. P1 most prominent bearing 10–13 prominent, isolated nodes or tubercles; P2, P3, P4 slightly less prominent, with isolated nodes; P5, P6 forming more continuous convex cords; P2 nodulose, P3–P4 with blurred nodes. P2, P4 atrophied. Weak, close-set growth lines forming delicate, cancellate pattern with spiral threads. Fasciole strongly swollen, strongly twisted, delimiting deep, moderately wide pseudoumbilicus.Aperture wide, ovate; outer lip thin with weak ID (always simple) and eleven lirae placed some distance behind peristome and corresponding to D1 to D4; D1 trifid or quadrifid, D2 trifid or bifid, D3–D4 simple or bifid. Anal canal deeply incised, V-shaped, accentuated by weak, blunt parietal swelling. Siphonal canal moderately short, very wide, open, straight. Columella broadly excavated. Smooth, twisted at siphonal canal. Columellar callus poorly delimited from base, erect at pseudoumbilicus, adherent above.
Discussion. Janssenia echinulata (Pusch, 1837) is a look-alike of Reishia haemastomoides (Hoernes & Auinger, 1882) in general shape. However, they differ in the fewer, wider-spaced, dot-like denticles deep inside the aperture of R. haemastomoides (simple D1–D4) and by its distinct shoulder on early teleoconch whorls. Janssenia echinulata develops numerous delicate secondary cords overrun by faint tertiary threads, whereas R. haemastomoides develops broader and well-defined secondary cords that are not themselves overlain by tertiary treads. Literature records of both species are hard to separate from the illustrations, especially if apertures are not well documented. Therefore, the chresonymy above may be incomplete.
Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.
