Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Massachusetts to Florida) and Brazil ( Amapá, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul) ( Rathbun 1918; Righi 1967; Williams 1984; Abele & Kim 1986; Bordin 1987; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Melo 1996, 1998; Coelho 1997; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Almeida et al. 2007b; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Coelho et al. 2008).

Remarks. Previous records in the coast of São Paulo include Ubatuba (Bertini et al. 2004). Recently, Palacios-Theil & Felder (2020) erected a new genera to receive some Pinnixa species including the genus Rathbunixa in which Pinnixa sayana was allocated. It is frequently found in burrows of polychaete Arenicola ( Coelho & Ramos 1972; Powers 1977; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Melo 1998) and probably with the callianassid Lepidophthalmus siriboia ( Almeida et al. 2010) .
