Acanthosoma CURTIS, 1824 , legend to pl. 20. Type species: Cimex haemorrhoidale LINNAEUS, 1758 .
Diagnosis. Dorsum green in ground color, usually with reddish markings and dense dark punctures. Head triangular, jugum not extending beyond apex of tylus. Maxillary plate usually with a small tubercle. Pronotum hexagonal, declined on anterior portion, with a pair ofhumeral angles. Scutellum triangular, longer than basal width. Mesosternal carina produced to prosternum or head anteriorly, not produced posteriorly. Scent gland spout elongate, 0.75 times as wide as metapleuron. Abdominal sternum III with a spine-like anterior projection reaching fore coxae. Pendergrast's organs present on abdominal sterna VI and VII in female. Posterolateral corner of abdominal segment VII usually round in male and angulate in female. Pygophore bearing a pair of dorsolateral projections, sometimes forceps-like in shape. Conjunctiva with a pair of sclerotized lobes. Vesica cylindrical, with long whip-like apical portion.
Remarks. KUMAR (1974) synonymized the genera Anaxandra STAL, 1876 and Sastragala AMYOT & AUDINET-SERVILLE, 1843 with Acanthosoma in his comprehensive review of the World Acanthosomatidae . Some recent workers, however, treated Anaxandra and Sastragala as independent genera (e. g., GOLLNER-SCHEIDING, 2006).
