Hexophthalma Karsch, 1879: 109 View in CoL . Replacement name for Hexomma Karsch, 1878 View in CoL ; preoccupied by Hexomma Thorell, 1876 View in CoL ( Opiliones View in CoL : Sclerosomatidae View in CoL ).

Diagnosis: Species of Hexophthalma can be distinguished from Sicarius by the lack of posterior median spinnerets ( Fig. 11A, C View Figure 11 ); palpal bulb with a long body with parallel sides ( Fig. 23C View Figure 23 ) (subconical in Sicarius ); and lack of a setae tuft anterior to the spinnerets in females.

Description: As for the subfamily, except for the following. Chelicerae lamina with weakly sclerotized apex ( Fig. 13B View Figure 13 ) (except H. spatulata comb. nov., with strongly sclerotized apex). Sternum cordiform, wider than long and posteriorly truncate. Palp with simple, not sculptured femoral thorns ( Fig. 18G View Figure 18 ). Leg femora without prolateral black setae, with white macrosetae (and brown macrosetae in H. spatulata comb. nov.), which might be medially widened ( Fig. 24A View Figure 24 ). Trichobothria with a distal smooth surface ( Fig. 31H View Figure 31 ). ALS with black setae short, not covering the spinning field, without major ampullate gland spigots. PMS absent, sometimes replaced by setae ( Fig. 11C View Figure 11 ). Male palpal bulb with parallel sides, with embolus long and sinuous ( Figs 20A, C View Figure 20 and 21A, C View Figure 21 ) or broad and blunt, with a keel ( Figs 20E View Figure 20 , 22C, D, E View Figure 22 ). Inner spermathecae branched, with branches arising from a single stalk ( Figs 19C View Figure 19 , 20B, D View Figure 20 ). Outer spermathecae present, not branched, reduced ( Figs 19C View Figure 19 , 20B, D View Figure 20 ) (branched in H. spatulata comb. nov.).

Distribution: Dry regions of southern Africa.

Species included: Hexophthalma hahni (Karsch) comb. rest., H. testacea (Purcell) comb. nov., H. albospinosa (Purcell) comb. nov., H. damarensis (Lawrence) comb. nov., H. dolichocephala (Lawrence) comb. nov., H. spatulata (Pocock) comb. nov.
