This species is distributed across marine and brackish waters of the Eastern Atlantic. Trachinotus ovatus is characterized by a moderately elongated and compressed body, with a bluntly pointed snout and a small eye. The body features five distinct dark blotches along the sides, with the first four blotches positioned below the spinous dorsal fin. The anal fin is typically straight, and the caudal-fin lobes exhibit darkened tips that turn black near the ends.
