Natural History: Bøving & Champlain (1920) reported this species as an important predator of Scolytus quadrispinosus Say infesting hickory ( Carya ), has been reared from eastern red cedar ( Juniperus virginiana ) infested with cedar bark beetles ( Phloeosinus ) and Cerambycidae ; also reared from maple ( Acer ) and sweet gum ( Liquidambar ) but infestations were not reported. Diurnal as adults, they can be abundant in summer where their Scolytus prey occur and overwinter under bark; larvae occur in Scolytus galleries and mines ( Bøving & Champlain, 1920). It has also been recorded from sumac ( Rhus ) infested by the scolytine Pityophthorus ( Knull 1951) , and calamondin ( Citrus mitis ) ( Leavengood 2008b). An adult was observed feeding on an adult ladybeetle Cycloneda munda (Say) in GA ( Rifkind 2016). Adults have been collected with lights (UV, MV), Steiner traps (often used for fruit flies) and Malaise traps ( Leavengood 2008b).
Mimicry: A mutillid mimic ( Mawdsley, 1994).
Chemical lures: Leavengood (2008b) reported collections via Lindgren funnel traps baited with ethanol or turpentine + frontalin from label data, but the attractiveness of these lures to E. ichneumonius has yet to be tested.
