Natural History: Chittenden (1890) reported that adults have been collected from pignut hickory ( Carya glabra ) and southern wax myrtle ( Myrica cerifera ). Whelan (1936) reported that it occurs in prairie habitats. Mawdsley (1999) reported that it can be found “on sunlit foliage in barrens and other open habitats, including recently logged areas” from personal observations. Mawdsley (2002b) reported that the larvae inhabit the limbs and trunks of hickory ( Carya ) and oak ( Quercus ) (infestations not noted). Trieff (2002) reported collecting it via canopy fogging in northern red oak ( Quercus rubra ) Tennessee, and two specimens were collected by fogging in a mixed deciduous forest in Kentucky by author EGC. Majka (2006) reported collection records from northern bush honeysuckle ( Diervilla lonicera ), paper birch ( Betula papyrifera ), possumhaw viburnum ( Viburnum nudum ), and white meadowsweet ( Spiraea alba ) and reported collections from coastal heath barrens, coastal dunes, pine barrens, riversides, ravines and deciduous forests. Dorshorst & Young (2008) reported collections from apple ( Malus domestica ), goldenrod ( Solidago ), hybrid poplar ( Populus nigra x P. deltoides ), and black ( Quercus velutina ), burr ( Q. macrocarpa ), northern pin ( Q. ellipsoidalis ), and red ( Q. alba ) oaks in Wisconsin. They reported that Malaise traps and sweeping in oak habitats (savannas and barrens) were the most frequent collection methods. Price (2014) reared an unspecified number of specimens from the Canada thistle stem gall fly ( Urophora cardui (L.)) galls in Canada thistle in North Dakota.
