Phyllobaenus schusteri (LeConte, 1866)
status

Phyllobaenus schusteri (LeConte, 1866) ; Cleridae : Clerinae : Hydnocerini

Illustrations: Plate 4-H. Phyllobaenus key, couplet 1-E, couplet 5-B, C

Distribution: TX to SC to IL.

- Recorded from: IL, LA, MO, MS, SC, TN and TX ( Lohde 1900; Knull 1949; Corporaal 1950; Barr 1975; BugGuide). Records from Arizona ( Barr 1975) are likely misidentifications of Neohydnocera chiricahuana Knull. Wolcott (1927) clarified that the “ Texas species (from Schenkling 1908) that has been placed as Hydnocera lateralis , and also as H. schusteri LeConte , is an entirely different species [ chapini ].” So, the single known literature record from Cameron County in extreme southern Texas (repeated in subsequent literature) was erroneous, making the northeastern Texas records from BugGuide (Anderson and Jasper Counties) the true state records.

- New State Records: LOUISIANA: Natchitoches Parish: Kisatchie N. F., Red Dirt W. M. A., 19-20-IV-198[?], E. G. Riley ( TAMU, 1); 10mi W Gorum, 3-18-VI-1989, R. Wharton ( TAMU, 1); [county unknown]: N of Tulla, IV-1955, D. A. Young ( NMNH, 1) . MISSISSIPPI: Lauderdale County: Meridian, 13- VI ( NMNH, 1) . MISSOURI: Barry County: Mark Twain National Forest, Hwy 112, 2.5 miles south of Roaring River State Park , blossoms of Ceanothus americanus , 25-VI-1978, G. H . Nelson ( FSCA, 1) . SOUTH CAROLINA: Oconee County: Mountain Rest , 14-VI-1957, W. J. Brown ( CNCI, 1) .

Natural History: Nothing has been published on the life history of this rarely collected species. The Missouri record above was collected from New Jersey tea ( Ceanothus americanus ) blossoms.

Comments: Phyllobaenus stupkai Knull was designated as a junior synonym of P schusteri ( Barr 2018) .
