See Cory (1918: 268).

Type series: Cabanis (1874: 97) did not specify the number of specimens upon which he based this species, but described only an adult male (not mentioning sex of the specimen, but the description he provided is sufficient to identify it). However, he identified as this species two specimens simultaneously received and catalogued under a single number in the Accession Catalogue of the ZMB: an unsexed adult bird and a juvenile bird (no more relevant specimens were listed in this Catalogue). Although the juvenile was not mentioned in the description (Cabanis 1874: 97), both these specimens should be considered syntypes of the species (see ICZN 1999, Art. 72.4.1.1). We found only the latter specimen in 2008.

Syntype (lost): ZMB 21908 (B-10023), unsexed [= 3] collected by Jelski on an unknown date [= May to September 1871] at "Maraynioc" [= Maraynioc, Peru].

Syntype: ZMB 21909 (B-10023), juv., collected by Jelski on an unknown date [= May to September 1871] at "Maraynioc" [= Maraynioc, Peru].

Type locality: "Maraynioc" (Cabanis 1874: 97), i.e. Maraynioc, Peru [11.37°S, 75.40°W].

Remarks: Although Taczanowski (1889: 11) and Sztolcman & Domaniewski (1927: 111) suggested that the MIZ possesses a type specimen of this species, it never did so (see Mlíkovský 2009b for details). Warren (1966: 92) listed specimen BMNH 1887.3.22.1432 (ad. 3, collected by Jelski in 1871 at “Muraynioc” [= Maraynioc, Peru] as a syntype of this species. Salvin (1892: 155) more aptly listed this bird as “an authentic specimen”. Cabanis (1874) knew only one adult male, which was deposited in the ZMB and cannot be identical with the BMNH specimen. The BMNH specimen thus has no type status, although it is a topotype of Urolampra eupogon Cabanis.

Several authors incorrectly stated that this species was described in the genus Metallura Gould, 1847 (e.g. Elliot 1879a: 164, 1879b: 11, Taczanowski 1884a: 352, 1889: 11, Salvin 1892: 155, Boucard 1893: 72, Cory 1918: 268, Sztolcman & Domaniewski 1927: 111). In fact, Cabanis (1874: 97) described the species in the genus Urolampra Cabanis & Heine, 1860 (see also Hartert 1900: 163, Simon 1921: 381, Peters 1945: 119). Cabanis's name must thus be written in parentheses when the species name is combined with the genus Metallura (ICZN 1999, Art. 51.3).

Taczanowski (1875: 544) synonymized Urolampra eupogon Cabanis, 1874 with Metallura hedvigae Taczanowski, 1874, but later (Taczanowski 1884a: 352, 1889: 11) reversed his opinion and listed hedvigae in the synonymy of eupogon . Salvin (1892: 155) showed that Cabanis's eupogon has a few weeks priority over the Taczanowski's hedvigae and most authors have used the name eupogon for this hummingbird (e.g. Boucard 1893: 72, Hartert 1900: 163, Cory 1918: 268, Simon 1921: 381, Peters 1945: 119, Meyer de Schauensee & Eisenmann 1966: 187, Fjeldså & Krabbe 1990: 283, Heindl & Schuchmann 1998, Heindl 1999, Dickinson 2003: 274), although Sztolcman & Domaniewski (1927: 111) again gave precedence to hedvigae without explanation.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03C5CE7BFFDA3B27FF0ABFEBFE42FF33	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Sztolcman & Domaniewski (1927: 120–121) selected "Amable Maria" as terra typica of the species, because the male was collected there, albeit without designating the male as a lectotype of the species. Their action is thus invalid (see ICZN 1999, Art. 76) and the type locality of Thamnistes rufescens Cabanis continues to comprise both localities where the syntypes were collected, i.e. Amable María [11.17°S, 75.35°W] and Monterrico, Peru [12.05°S, 74.10°W].

Remarks: The ZMB received in June 1873 (see the Accession Catalogue sub Nr. 10226) a male of Thamnistes rufescens (ZMB 21190) collected by Jelski on an unknown date at ”Monterico”. It has no type status, because Cabanis (1873a) presented the description of this species at the 5th Annual Meeting of the German Ornithological' Society held in Berlin on 10 October 1872, prior to receipt of this specimen, and both syntypes were later deposited in the MIZ (see above). However, this is a topotype, which probably originated from the same series as the lost syntypes did.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03C5CE7BFFDE3B24FF0ABEB2FD6DF83C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Cory & Hellmayr (1924: 350).

Type series: Cabanis (1873c: 318) based this species on an unspecified number of specimens, which included at least a male and a female. Only a male is registered in the Accession Catalogue of the ZMB, although Cabanis (1873c: 315) wrote that specimens on which he reported are deposited in the ZMB. It is thus possible that Cabanis either returned the female or females to Taczanowski or that he never saw it, and based this information on the data received from Taczanowski. In any case, the specimen in the ZMB is a syntype of Hypsibamon andicolus Cabanis, while one or more females in the MIZ are also syntypes of this species. Taczanowski (1875: 531) mentioned that he received "plusieurs exemplaires de Maraynioc et d'Arancocha" (several specimens from Maraynioc and Arancocha [= Acancocha, Peru]) of this species. Sclater (1877: 449) obtained from Taczanowski an unsexed specimen, reportedly collected by Jelski at “Maraynioc” in 1873. Being of unknown sex, this specimen (which had to be collected in 1871, because Jelski did not collect at Maraynioc in 1873 – see Mlíkovský 2009b) has no type status. Taczanowski (1889: 20) listed in the MIZ collections a male and a female as Cabanis's types of this species. There is no evidence that the MIZ male had a type status, but the female could have a type status and is thus listed below. All MIZ specimens of this species collected by Jelski were probably removed from the MIZ in 1915 and subsequently destroyed in the 1920s (cf. Sztolcman & Domaniewski 1927: 125; see Mlíkovský 2009b for details). Entries in the Accession Catalogue of the ZMB indicate that he had at least two relevant specimens at his disposal, which are thus syntypes of the species. In addition, the Berlepsch Collection (now in the SMF) contains a specimen of this species, received by Berlepsch from Taczanowski, via Cabanis, in June 1873, according to the label associated with the specimen (SysTax 2009). The latter specimen also qualifies as a syntype of S. humilis Cabanis.

Syntype: ZMB 21205 (B-9998), 3, collected by Jelski in "1873" (younger ZMB label) [= May to September 1871] at "Maraynioc" [= Maraynioc, Peru].
