Brazil, Goiás State, Caiapônia Municipality, 16°42’23.5”S 51°45’23.2”W, 640 m.

Type material. Holotype male: “ Brazil, Goiás State, Caiapônia Municipality, 17.XI.2012, 16°42’23.5”S 51°45’23.2”W, 640m, Raimund E.A., Santos A.P.M. & Sgarbi L. leg. ” (DZRJ Coleoptera 6001).

Diagnosis. L. zanclus is distinguished from other maculate species of Liocanthydrus by the following combination of characters: a) presence of a small medial posterior elytral band near elytral suture (Fig. 1a); b) aedeagus (Figs 1b–f) with distal region of median lobe straight in dorsal aspect, elongate and parallel in lateral aspect, without lateral flanges enlarged; left lateral lobe narrow, without setal fringe at apex.

Description. Measurements (in mm). Holotype male: TL = 3.2, GW = 1.8, TL/GW = 1.8, HW = 1.0, EW = 0.7, HW/EW = 1.4, PNWant = 1.1, PNWpost = 1.7, PNWpost/PNWant = 1.5.

Coloration. Head and pronotum light brownish yellow; anteromedial portion of pronotum dark brown. Elytra maculate; color of elytra dark brown; color of elytral maculae yellow, forming bands or spots: one small, extending down anterior third of lateral margin from humeral angle; one large, wider and fusiform on anterior half of disc; one small on posterior half of disc near suture; and one very large, elongate and obliquely extending down posterior half of lateral margin to apex (Fig. 1a). Venter brownish yellow.

Body. Moderately convex; body outline ovate, elongate; anteriorly rounded and posteriorly pointed, broadest near anterior margin of elytra; lateral outline continuous between pronotum and elytron.

Head. Clypeus slightly convex, anterior margin subtruncate; eyes relatively small (HW/EW = 1.4); antenna slightly serrate; antennomere XI about 2 × length of antennomere X.

Thorax. Pronotum broad and convex, broadest posteriorly; pronotal bead broad, continuous around anterolateral angles; with series of setiferous punctures adjacent to anterior margin. Elytra broadest near anterior margin, gradually narrowing to apex, with sparse and fine punctures. Ventral surface glabrous, shiny. Prostenal process extremely broad and flat, widest at apex; apex truncate with feeble posteromedial projection. Noterid platform extending beyond first abdominal ventrite posteriorly, with sharply rounded apical lobes bearing four stout, closely-spaced setae. Protarsomere I slightly dilated; protarsomeres I–III with adhesive setae; protarsomeres IV and V slender, glabrous. Mesotarsi not dilated; mesotarsomeres I–II with adhesive setae.

Abdomen. Ventral surface with sparse and fine setae; ventrites II and III fused; ventrites IV and V similar in size and form; ventrite VI tapering gradually to apex. Aedeagus (Figs 1b–f) asymmetrical; median lobe falciform, curved dorsally, with deep longitudinal ventral groove, without lateral flange and left basal flange enlarged, with distal region straight dorsally, elongate and parallel in lateral aspect; left lateral lobe falciform in lateral aspect, without distinct fringe of setae; right lateral lobe ca. 1/2 × length of left lateral lobe, subtriangular, glabrous.

Comparative notes. This species appears very similar to L. nanops Baca et al., L. octoguttatus (Zimmermann) and L. mecespilus sp. nov. with respect to color pattern, but can be distinguished from other Liocanthydrus species by the absence of an enlarged lateral flange on the median lobe of aedeagus and the absence of a setal fringe on the left lateral lobe.

Etymology. The specific name is the Greek substantive zanclus, meaning sickle-shaped. This is in reference to the shape of the median and left lateral lobes of aedeagus.

Distribution. Brazil. Known only from the type locality (Goiás State).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03C287DBFFC0BB6AE9CFFDC672FEF828	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
