Imago (Figs 5, 6): Wingspan ♂ 13 – 16 mm ♀ 18 – 24 mm. Head white, labial palpus with segment 3 short and slender, segment 2 thickened with fuscous scales laterally; antennae weakly ringed white and pale fuscous. Thorax banded white and dark fuscous. Forewing whitish; costa suffused ochreous and irrorate dark fuscous; a series of four oblique dark fuscous fasciae, the third curved below a white area below and beyond a small blackish discal spot, dull orange between third and fourth fasciae; a fine dark fuscous subterminal line; termen a narrow band of orange-yellow; terminal cilia with a dark fuscous basal line, then whitish becoming darker. Hindwing white with markings as forewing, but lines generally straighter and more regular. Abdomen banded white and fuscous. A very variable species, but distinguished from others by the straight lines, especially of the hindwing. The form circealis Walker (Fig. 6), hitherto known as a distinct species, is common in southern Africa and Madagascar. It has the lines of the hindwing conjoined to make a broad band; the forewing, especially of the female, can be almost uniform brownish. Asian populations have been referred to ssp. linealis (Moore), and the African and European populations to the nominate subspecies. However the species is very variable in all the places it occurs, and there seems to be no basis for retaining separate subspecies. Male genitalia (Fig. 85): Uncus long and slender, curved towards venter especially in middle, some lateral setae near base only, gnathos 4 / 5 length of uncus, spatulate, apically with small upward pointing serrations around the tip. Valva with costa very slightly concave in middle, sides almost parallel, dorsal edge more strongly bent, process arising near base of valva very small; juxta parallel sided; aedeagus with a broad patch of very small spines in vesica. The valvae in situ are curved inwards, especially the outer part of the costa, a feature which is not apparent in slides and illustrations. Female genitalia (Fig. 135): Ostium small, ¼ width of abdomen, colliculum immediately behind ostium, ductus bursae very long and narrow, widening only slightly into corpus bursae; signa comprising a pair of small patches of blunt spines. Overall length of bursae 0.9 x length of abdomen. Tympanal organs: Venulae almost straight and parallel, tympani typical of the genus.	en	Agassiz, David J. L. 03C387FBFFCB6573FF4345CCFD3EC4B4.taxon	type_taxon	Type species Nymphula luteivittalis Mabille, 1880. A genus of fewer than ten species, all described hitherto from Madagascar. One of the chief characters described by Marion occurs only in the males, but only females have been found in Africa; however the long maxillary palpus and wing pattern suggest this generic placement. The corpus bursae of the female genitalia is without signa. No males of the African species have been available for study. Although there are over 30 specimens of angolensis sp. n. the lack of males raises questions about whether they might be parthenogenetic.	en	Agassiz, David J. L. Female genitalia (Figs. 144 a – c): Ostium wide, almost half width of abdomen; ductus short and broad leading almost immediately into corpus bursae; this has a sclerotised plate around the dorsal side of the corpus extending about half of its length; signa comprising a large sclerotised patch bearing spines. There is considerable variation, the number of these spines varies from just a few in Sierra Leone (Fig. 144 a) to many in central Africa (Fig. 144 b) and then none in south central Africa (Fig. 144 c). Tympanal organs: Venulae wide and divergent posteriorly; tympanum almost square with rounded corners. Diagnosis: Differs from other African Elophila spp. in the comparatively even ground colour of the wings, in the male genitalia by the cornutus in the aedeagus and the pointed octavals on sternite 8 and in the broad ostium of the female genitalia. Biology: Larva recorded from Azolla on which it can be a pest (Alam, 1987), in a case on Vossia procera (Ghesquière, 1942). Probably feeds on a number of aquatic plants. Adults have been taken in February and every month from April to November; this implies that the species is likely to be continuously brooded. Distribution: Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Sierra Leone, Côte D’Ivoire, Benin, Senegal, Ghana, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda; Madagascar. 03C387FBFFE2655BFF43478AFBF3C5F5.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This species shows remarkable variation, in some localities it is very dark, whilst in others the markings are chiefly orange rather than dark fuscous. These differences may imply a species complex, but at present it is left as an aggregate species. Long series are needed to establish differences with confidence and in many collections only females are represented.	en	Agassiz, David J. L.
