Martarega barcelos sp. nov. has many differences in relation to M. williamsi: spines at forefemur absent; hemelytral process exceeding the length of membrane (Figure 1A); first longitudinal stripe equal to M. williamsi, except the stain covering the stripe and extending for four-fifths of hemelytra length; second stripe at costal margin extending for approximately one-half of hemelytra length, with a stain about it and extending along the entire length of hemelytra (Figure 1A); right clasper more rounded; left clasper more robust with a longitudinal carina along its length (Figure 1C,D).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03DF811D1E73603EFEECFAD8883FFC61	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This is because both species resemble each other, sharing the apex of hind trochanter with a sharp concavity and the presence of small spines along embolium of female hemelytra (Figure 2B). The history of M. hungerfordi has become somewhat confused. There are differences between descriptions and illustrations of M. hungerfordi in Truxal (1949) and Nieser (1970, 1975). According to Nieser (1970, 1975), the shape of the female hemelytral stripe, which was illustrated by him, is conspicuous and the hemelytral process exceeds the apex of membrane. Unfortunately, there is a discrepancy in M. hungerfordi drawings by Nieser (1970, 1975). In his description, Nieser (1975) agrees with Truxal (1949) on the size of hemelytral process, which is approximately three-quarters as long as membrane, whereas in Nieser (1970, 1975) M. hungerfordi is illustrated as having the hemelytral process exceeding the apex of membrane. At the same time, Nieser’s description of M. hungerfordi males emphasized the hind trochanter with a sharp concavity at apex, although Truxal (1949) did not mention clearly this taxonomic character for females. Finally, both M. nieseri sp. nov. and Nieser’s M. hungerfordi specimens tend to be shorter than Truxal’s specimens and were found coexisting at the same Municipality in Amazonas State.

Martarega nieseri sp. nov. can be immediately distinguished from M. hungerfordi by: (1) shorter length, (2) hemelytral process strong, exceeding apex of membrane in both sexes (Figure 2A,B), (3) claspers rounded and elongated, very similar in shape (Figure 2D,E), (4) distinct shape of female hemelytral stripe, enlarged in the first third of hemelytral length, tapering in the rest of length, and (5) internal margin of female embolium with toothed area along posterior half, bearing 45 to 65 teeth (Figure 2B).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03DF811D1E70603BFEA8FBE38D80FF79	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. We can find otherwise reliable variation among the shape of genital capsule in the specimen of M. pydanieli sp. nov. The left clasper tends to be longer than the right in several species. Martarega pydanieli sp. nov., however, can be readily recognized by the presence of a distinct dorsally rounded process near left clasper, as well as by distinctive heartshaped left clasper (Figure 3D).

Keying M. pydanieli, sp. nov. in the key to the Martarega species presented by Truxal (1949), members of this new species mistakenly key out to M. brasiliensis. In spite of resembling this species in having the ventral surface of mesotrochanter smooth, without central nodules or central groups of short bristles, members of M. brasiliensis do not display those peculiar genitalic features. Martarega pydanieli sp. nov. can be readily recognized by the mesotrochanter with its lateral margin varying from somewhat straight to angulose, without a patch of yellow setae on ventral surface (Figure 3B), by the hemelytral process about three-fifths as long as membrane (Figure 3A), and by the distinctive shape of male genitalia (Figure 3C,D).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03DF811D1E75603AFEF3FEC48ACEFD23	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. In spite of resembling M. membranacea in having a median longitudinal stripe bifurcated near the apex of hemelytra (Figure 5A,B) and similar right clasper (Figures 4C, 5D), M. chinai can be recognized by the format of the left clasper, which is distinct, with a longitudinal carina along its length (Figure 5E). The alleged “nodule” on ventral surface of male mesotrochanter (Figures 5C), which differentiates M. chinai from M. membranacea, is a group of short bristles as observed in M. gonostyla (Figure 8C). Females of this species can be distinguished from females of M. membranacea by their hemelytral process not extending to tip of membrane (Figure 5B). In female M. membranacea, the hemelytral process visibly reaches the apex of membrane (Figure 4B).

Material examined

Brazil, State of Amazonas, Tefé Municipality, Solimões River, São Francisco da Boca do Capivara, Botão Lake [3.26539 ◦ S, 64.62745 ◦ W], 09.IX.2003, (N. These records refer to the species M. nieseri sp. nov. otherwise (Nico Nieser in litt.), with which M. hungerfordi may be confused. This species is apparently more closely related to M. hungerfordi. This species shares with M. oriximinaensis the hind trochanter with a sharp concavity at its distal end (compare Figures 6D,E and 7B) and a median narrow stripe not bifurcated at apex of hemelytra (Figure 6A,B). Martarega oriximinaensis can be easily recognized by (1) the presence of one or two groups of short bristles near the lateral margin of the mesotrochanter (Figure 6C), (2) the distinct acute shape of right clasper, slightly larger than left, never longer than wide, and (3) the more rounded shape of left clasper (Figure 6F,G).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03DF811D1E6E6020FF69FEE4883BFD2B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This species and M. williamsi are very similar in hemelytral appearance, both having stripes along the costal region of hemelytra and small groups of short bristles distributed throughout mesotrochanter. Specimens of M. gonostyla have an enlarged and dark single stripe extending onto the costal margin of hemelytra (Figure 8A,B), whereas in M. williamsi the hemelytra bear two stripes (Figure 9A). Another useful character for separation lies in the outer lateral margin of male mesotrochanters, which on M. gonostyla bears three or more small groups of short bristles (Figure 8C).

Martarega gonostyla macropterous forms present brown hemelytra with hyaline stripes, resembling those stripe shapes of macropterous form of M. uruguayensis. Its males may be readily differentiated from other male members of M. gonostyla by the presence of only one group of short bristles on the ventral surface of their mesotrochanters (Figure 10D). Rather than possessing an emargination at the base of the hind femora as seen in M. uruguayensis, female specimens of M. gonostyla bear instead hind femora with continuous margins.

Material examined

Brazil, State of Amazonas, Barcelos Municipality, Serra do Aracá, Igarapé Cobra, camp, 136 m a.s.l. Martarega mcateei is not a common species and it is confined to the central-southern South America (Figure 14B), with one record from Amazon Region (Fittkau 1977). In addition, this species is relatively uncommon in collections, possibly because of its geographical range, which encompasses the infrequently visited regions. According to Truxal (1949), almost all the types of M. mcateei were destroyed, except for a single female housed at the collection of C.O. Bare (Museo de La Plata).

According to the original description by Jaczewski (1928), this species is similar to M. uruguayensis, but it is longer, more robust and has a shorter ocular commissure. The hemelytral appearance of the macropterous forms of both species is very similar. However, females of the two species may be separated by their greatly differing hind femora. In M. mcateei they are not emarginated along their bases.

Here evidence is provided that the female specimens of M. mcateei studied by Nieser (1970) were erroneously identified. The description by Nieser (1970) states clearly that the previously female specimens of M. mcateei present hind femora emarginated at their bases, whereas Jaczewski (1928) described such female specimens as having hind femora not emarginated. Taken together, the aforementioned comments are consistent with only one conclusion: that Nieser’s description of “female specimens of M. mcateei ” in fact refers to female specimens of M. uruguayensis.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03DF811D1E65602AFE70FC678A9DFEF8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
