Taxonomic notes The specimens of M. barcelos sp. nov. key to M. williamsi in the Truxal (1949) key to Martarega species. This is because M. barcelos sp. nov. appears most closely related to M. williamsi, sharing with the latter the pattern of hemelytral stripes, with a short longitudinal median stripe and a second stripe at costal margin, and the presence of a group of short bristles near the outer lateral margin of mesotrochanter (compare Figures 1 and 9). Martarega barcelos sp. nov. has many differences in relation to M. williamsi: spines at forefemur absent; hemelytral process exceeding the length of membrane (Figure 1 A); first longitudinal stripe equal to M. williamsi, except the stain covering the stripe and extending for four-fifths of hemelytra length; second stripe at costal margin extending for approximately one-half of hemelytra length, with a stain about it and extending along the entire length of hemelytra (Figure 1 A); right clasper more rounded; left clasper more robust with a longitudinal carina along its length (Figure 1 C, D).	en	Barbosa, Julianna Freires, Ribeiro, José Ricardo Inacio, Nessimian, Jorge Luiz (2012): A synopsis of Martarega White, 1879 (Insecta: Heteroptera: Notonectidae) occurring in the Brazilian Amazonia, with descriptions of three new species. Etymology Named in honour of Dr Nico Nieser (National Museum of Natural History – “ Naturalis ”, the Netherlands) for his contributions to the study of Brazilian backswimmer taxonomy and because he is currently one of the greatest researchers of Nepomorpha. Taxonomic notes The specimens of M. nieseri sp. nov. may be mistakenly keyed out to M. hungerfordi in the Truxal (1949) key to Martarega species. This is because both species resemble each other, sharing the apex of hind trochanter with a sharp concavity and the presence of small spines along embolium of female hemelytra (Figure 2 B). The history of M. hungerfordi has become somewhat confused. There are differences between descriptions and illustrations of M. hungerfordi in Truxal (1949) and Nieser (1970, 1975). According to Nieser (1970, 1975), the shape of the female hemelytral stripe, which was illustrated by him, is conspicuous and the hemelytral process exceeds the apex of membrane. Unfortunately, there is a discrepancy in M. hungerfordi drawings by Nieser (1970, 1975). In his description, Nieser (1975) agrees with Truxal (1949) on the size of hemelytral process, which is approximately three-quarters as long as membrane, whereas in Nieser (1970, 1975) M. hungerfordi is illustrated as having the hemelytral process exceeding the apex of membrane. At the same time, Nieser’s description of M. hungerfordi males emphasized the hind trochanter with a sharp concavity at apex, although Truxal (1949) did not mention clearly this taxonomic character for females. Finally, both M. nieseri sp. nov. and Nieser’s M. hungerfordi specimens tend to be shorter than Truxal’s specimens and were found coexisting at the same Municipality in Amazonas State. Martarega nieseri sp. nov. can be immediately distinguished from M. hungerfordi by: (1) shorter length, (2) hemelytral process strong, exceeding apex of membrane in both sexes (Figure 2 A, B), (3) claspers rounded and elongated, very similar in shape (Figure 2 D, E), (4) distinct shape of female hemelytral stripe, enlarged in the first third of hemelytral length, tapering in the rest of length, and (5) internal margin of female embolium with toothed area along posterior half, bearing 45 to 65 teeth (Figure 2 B).	en	Barbosa, Julianna Freires, Ribeiro, José Ricardo Inacio, Nessimian, Jorge Luiz (2012): A synopsis of Martarega White, 1879 (Insecta: Heteroptera: Notonectidae) occurring in the Brazilian Amazonia, with descriptions of three new species. 03DF811D1E75603AFEF3FEC48ACEFD23.taxon	description	(Figures 3 A – D, 13 A) Type material Holotype. Brazil, Rondônia State, Ariquemes Municipality, Jamari River, Igarapé Bom Futuro [10.133 ◦ S, 63.200 ◦ W], 30. VII. 1985, (V. Py-Daniel and L. S. Aquino): 1 m (INPA), brachypterous. Description of holotype (brachypterous form) Measurements. Body length (from apex of head to apex of hemelytra at rest): 5.8; length of vertex: 0.28; greatest width of vertex: 0.26; width of eye: 0.6; length of ocular commissure: 0.34; length of head: 0.60; greatest width of head: 1.20; length of pronotum: 0.42; greatest width of pronotum: 1.36; median length of scutellum: 0.62; greatest width of scutellum: 0.86. Colour. General colour pale yellowish. Setae whitish. Eyes brown; fourth rostral segment brown. Hemelytra yellowish, with hyaline median longitudinal stripe not bifurcate (Figure 3 A) and second stripe extending anteriorly from base of hemelytral process onto approximately one-third of hemelytra; hairs of meso- and hind trochanters brown to blackish. Connexivum with numerous light brown setae. Head, thorax and abdomen. Head rounded; anterior margin of vertex convex, protruding before eyes, shorter than its length; ocular commissure longer than vertex, about three-fifths as long as the width of one eye. Pronotum with lateral margins strongly divergent; posterior margin concave; greatest pronotum width about 3.2 times its length in dorsal view; lateral margins of scutellum concave, wider than long, longer than median length of pronotum; internal margin of embolium without toothed area; hemelytral process three-fifths as long as membrane (Figure 3 A); forefemora without spines; mesotrochanters with lateral margin somewhat straight or angled, and several scattered short setae distributed ventrally near outer lateral margin (Figure 3 B); mesofemora without nodules; metaxyphus rounded; hind trochanters with continuous margin; hind femora with 11 setae distributed throughout inner lateral margins. Ventral abdominal keel with hairs distributed throughout lateral and anteroventral surfaces. Male genitalia. Genital capsule dorsally produced near right clasper; left clasper somewhat rounded, heart-like (Figure 3 D); right clasper irregular, narrower than left, slightly wider than longer (Figure 3 C). Macropterous forms and female specimens unknown. Etymology The name pydanieli honours Dr Victor Py-Daniel (INPA), who collected the only known male specimen of this species. Taxonomic notes The genital capsule is usually not exceedingly varied among Martarega species. We can find otherwise reliable variation among the shape of genital capsule in the specimen of M. pydanieli sp. nov. The left clasper tends to be longer than the right in several species. Martarega pydanieli sp. nov., however, can be readily recognized by the presence of a distinct dorsally rounded process near left clasper, as well as by distinctive heartshaped left clasper (Figure 3 D). Keying M. pydanieli, sp. nov. in the key to the Martarega species presented by Truxal (1949), members of this new species mistakenly key out to M. brasiliensis. In spite of resembling this species in having the ventral surface of mesotrochanter smooth, without central nodules or central groups of short bristles, members of M. brasiliensis do not display those peculiar genitalic features. Martarega pydanieli sp. nov. can be readily recognized by the mesotrochanter with its lateral margin varying from somewhat straight to angulose, without a patch of yellow setae on ventral surface (Figure 3 B), by the hemelytral process about three-fifths as long as membrane (Figure 3 A), and by the distinctive shape of male genitalia (Figure 3 C, D).	en	Barbosa, Julianna Freires, Ribeiro, José Ricardo Inacio, Nessimian, Jorge Luiz (2012): A synopsis of Martarega White, 1879 (Insecta: Heteroptera: Notonectidae) occurring in the Brazilian Amazonia, with descriptions of three new species. This is because its hind trochanters have a sharp concavity at its distal end (Figure 7 B) and its median stripe does not bifurcate at apex of hemelytra (Figure 7 A).	en	Barbosa, Julianna Freires, Ribeiro, José Ricardo Inacio, Nessimian, Jorge Luiz (2012): A synopsis of Martarega White, 1879 (Insecta: Heteroptera: Notonectidae) occurring in the Brazilian Amazonia, with descriptions of three new species. 03DF811D1E6E602DFE2CFAD88ADCFCBB.taxon	description	Martarega gonostyla macropterous forms present brown hemelytra with hyaline stripes, resembling those stripe shapes of macropterous form of M. uruguayensis. Its males may be readily differentiated from other male members of M. gonostyla by the presence of only one group of short bristles on the ventral surface of their mesotrochanters (Figure 10 D). Rather than possessing an emargination at the base of the hind femora as seen in M. uruguayensis, female specimens of M. gonostyla bear instead hind femora with continuous margins. 03DF811D1E65602AFE70FC678A9DFEF8.taxon	description	According to the original description by Jaczewski (1928), this species is similar to M. uruguayensis, but it is longer, more robust and has a shorter ocular commissure. The hemelytral appearance of the macropterous forms of both species is very similar. However, females of the two species may be separated by their greatly differing hind femora. In M. mcateei they are not emarginated along their bases. Here evidence is provided that the female specimens of M. mcateei studied by Nieser (1970) were erroneously identified. The description by Nieser (1970) states clearly that the previously female specimens of M. mcateei present hind femora emarginated at their bases, whereas Jaczewski (1928) described such female specimens as having hind femora not emarginated. Taken together, the aforementioned comments are consistent with only one conclusion: that Nieser’s description of “ female specimens of M. mcateei ” in fact refers to female specimens of M. uruguayensis.	en	Barbosa, Julianna Freires, Ribeiro, José Ricardo Inacio, Nessimian, Jorge Luiz (2012): A synopsis of Martarega White, 1879 (Insecta: Heteroptera: Notonectidae) occurring in the Brazilian Amazonia, with descriptions of three new species.
