03DDA74DFFAAAC38B091CBA73E8B9189.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Colletes altimontanus sp. n. can be confused with C. petropolitanus, however they can be distinguished by the anterolateral angle of pronotum, which, in the former, is spiniform, at least as long as its basal width (in C. petropolitanus, the anterolateral angle is triangular, shorter than its basal width), and by the discs of T 2 – T 5 covered by whitish tomentum (discs of T 2 – T 5 without tomentum, in C. petropolitanus). Colletes altimontanus is also a little similar to C. ornatus, but can be readily distinguished from it by the low, flat hypostomal carina (in C. ornatus, hypostomal carina is high and concave), by the mid-posterior region of mesoscutum with a small, smooth impunctate area (the impunctate area on mid-posterior region of mesoscutum in C. ornatus is substantially larger), and by the opaque, dark-brown tegula (in C. ornatus, tegula is translucent, pale-yellow). Colletes altimontanus is the only species known to occur in eastern South America that has a black integument covered by white pilosity, which gives it a greyish aspect. ♀ ♂ — Labrum black, impunctate but with longitudinal sulci; clypeus with mid-longitudinal depression; hypostomal carina ordinary; mid-posterior region of mesoscutum with small smooth, impunctate area; ventral region of mesepisternum, near ventral end of episternal groove, normal, without swollen area surrounded by hairs; marginal zone of T 1 flat. ♀ — Malar area 0.65 times as long as interocellar distance; clypeus coarsely rugose; F 1 distinctly longer than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, concave but not carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum spiniform, at least as long as its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum composed of a mix of black and white hairs; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, sparse; fore coxa without spine; inner spur of hind tibia serrate; punctation on T 1 inconspicuous. ♂ — Malar area 0.8 times as long as interocellar distance; clypeus without rugae; F 1 slightly shorter than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, concave but not carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum spiniform, at least as long as its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum composed of a mix of black and white hairs; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, sparse; fore coxa without spine; inner spur of hind tibia serrate; punctation on T 1 moderately coarse and dense, with more sparsely punctate disc; S 7 as illustrated in Figures 6 A, 6 B; genitalia as illustrated in Figures 7 A, 7 B.	en	Ferrari, Rafael R., Silveira, Fernando A. 03DDA74DFFA1AC27B091CB0238EC908C.taxon	discussion	Comments. In the original description of the species, Schrottky (1902: 345) states that the syntype series was composed by two females from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, collected by Dr. von Ihering. The types do not bear a label with these data, but the information recorded under the number “ 17.585 ” in the fourth volume of the catalogue of the Hymenoptera collection of the MZUSP is the following: Date unknown; identified as Colletes rufipes Smith, by Ducke in November [19] 13; collected by H. von Ihering in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, thus agreeing with the statement by Schrottky. It should be noted that a third female C. meridionalis labeled “ 17.585 ” and “ 100.081 ” and identified as C. furfuraceus Holmberg, 1886 by Friese in 1907 was also found in the MZUSP. Although clearly belonging to the same lot of bees, this species is not part of the type series, since it was not mentioned by Schrottky (probably because it was sent previously to Friese for identification).	en	Ferrari, Rafael R., Silveira, Fernando A. Colletes ornatus was included as one of the drawings in the paper by Schrottky (1902), and this author thus described it (our translation from Portuguese): “ Black; white-haired head; clypeus with some punctures and a mid-longitudinal groove; the antennae black. Mesonotum finely punctate, the scutellum with finer punctures, pilosity on both, fuscous. Anteriorly to the tegulae, there is a patch of long, orange hairs on each side, giving the insect a very beautiful appearance. Abdomen almost glabrous; the thorax ventrally, white-haired; legs fuscous, white-haired; scopa on hind femora somewhat yellowish. Tegulae testaceous; wings hyaline, the veins fuscous. Length 10 mm. ” (Schrottky 1902: 345 – 346).	en	Ferrari, Rafael R., Silveira, Fernando A. (2015): The species of Colletinae (Hymenoptera: Colletidae) in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. 03DDA74DFFBBAC22B091CB4D3EA996B7.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Colletes petropolitanus is similar to C. altimontanus sp. n., but can be readily distinguished from it by the characters listed in the diagnosis for the latter (see above). In an inattentive observation, C. petropolitanus could be confused with C. argentinus and C. rugicollis, however, the pilosity on metanotum is entirely white in C. petropolitanus (black in both C. argentinus and C. rugicollis), the pilosity on ventral surface of mesepisternum is very dense in C. petropolitanus (much sparser in C. argentinus and C. rugicollis), and the marginal zones of T 1 – T 4 are covered by white tomentum in C. petropolitanus (glabrous in C. argentinus and C. rugicollis). In addition, terga are minutely punctate in C. petropolitanus, whereas in both C. argentinus and C. rugicollis, terga, especially T 1, are coarsely punctate. ♀ / ♂ — Labrum black, impunctate, with longitudinal sulci; clypeus without mid-longitudinal depression; hypostomal carina ordinary; mid-posterior region of mesoscutum with very large, smooth impunctate area; ventral region of mesepisternum, near ventral end of episternal groove, normal, without swollen area surrounded by hairs; marginal zone of T 1 flat. ♀ — Malar area 0.35 times as long as interocellar distance; clypeus coarsely rugose; F 1 slightly longer than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, flat, not carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum triangular, shorter than its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum composed of a mix of black and white hairs; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, dense, hiding the integument; fore coxa bearing a spine; inner spur of hind tibia pectinate; punctation on T 1 inconspicuous. ♂ — Malar area 0.5 times as long as interocellar distance; F 1 slightly shorter than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, flat, not carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum triangular, shorter than its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum composed of a mix of black and white hairs; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, sparse; fore coxa without spine; inner spur of hind tibia serrate; punctation on T 1 inconspicuous; S 7 as illustrated in Figures 6 G, 6 H; genitalia as illustrated in Figures 7 G, 7 H.	en	Ferrari, Rafael R., Silveira, Fernando A. 03DDA74DFFBBAC22B091CB4D3EA996B7.taxon	discussion	Comments. The pilosity on mesoscutum of males is variable and black hairs may be present or not. The color of wing membrane of females also varies, and can be hyaline, light ferruginous, dark-brown or fuliginous. Moure (1949) concluded that the little variation found among specimens of C. petropolitanus (see above) from different regions of Brazil (including the type locality, Petrópolis, in Rio de Janeiro state) and from Paraguay and Bolivia did not support the recognition of different taxa among them. Moreover, he synonymized, under C. petropolitanus, the species C. catulus Vachal, 1904, C. inflatus Vachal, 1909, and C. speculiventris Cockerell, 1917, based on the study of their original descriptions. Later, he examined the holotype male of C. catulus and the lectotype male of C. speculiventris, confirming his previous decision (Moure & Urban 2002). Since access to the syntypes of C. inflatus was not possible, neither for Moure (1949) and Moure & Urban (2002), nor for the present study, the status of this species remains questionable.	en	Ferrari, Rafael R., Silveira, Fernando A. 03DDA74DFFB7AC2FB091CF163D45933C.taxon	discussion	Comments. The synonymy between C. rugicollis and C. punctatissimus was established by Moure (1944), who compared the holotype of C. punctatissimus with a male collected in copula with a female identified by him as C rugicollis. Unfortunately, two attempts each to locate the holotype of C. punctatissimus in MZUSP and in DZUP were unsuccessful. Rasmussen et al. (2009) were also unable to find it. Thus, we are following Moure (1944) in his opinion, but C. punctatissimus might also be a senior synonym of C. argentinus, which has been also synonymized with C. rugicollis by Moure & Urban (2002), an opinion still sustained by Moure et al. (2007). In his description of C. rugicollis, Friese (1900) mentions three females, two from Jungas [Yungas], Bolivia, sold by Staudinger, and one from “ S. Cruz-Blumenau ”. Moure (according to Moure & Urban 1992) examined one female from Yungas in ZMHB and, in that paper, they designated it as lectotype (see Fig. 17). It is not clear to us whether or not the second female from that locality and the one from “ S. Cruz-Blumenau ” are lost, but they could not be found in ZMHB, neither by Dr. Frank Koch, Hymenoptera curator of that museum, nor by Mr. Igor Coelho, during a visit to that museum, nor by Mrs. Viola Richter, the collection manager. In the preparation of a paper on H. Friese (Rasmussen & Ascher 2008), Dr. Claus Rasmussen (pers. comm.) was able to find only one of the three syntypes in the ZMHB, presumably the specimen examined by Moure and designated by him as the species’ lectotype.	en	Ferrari, Rafael R., Silveira, Fernando A. Rhynchocolletes albicinctus presents several autapomorphies (e. g., punctate labrum and malar area very elongated) that are also found in R. langeanus, and which support the synonymization of these species by Moure et al. (2007). Among hundreds of Colletinae specimens examined, only two individuals of R. albicinctus were available for our study, suggesting that this could be a rare species, at least in Minas Gerais.	en	Ferrari, Rafael R., Silveira, Fernando A.
