03DD1656DA11FFE4ABB7B4D38B4FF451.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. The following combination of characters distinguishes Cyphochilus from other closely related genera within the Melolonthinae: elytra densely covered with uniformly distributed scales; the apical segment of the maxillary palpi elongated and narrow, lacking any callus or excavation on its outer surface; a strongly asymmetric labrum (Fig. 2); a lateral margin of the prothorax with a regular curvature; long claws with a broad base; and highly asymmetric parameres in most species.	en	Sreedevi, Kolla, Sahoo, Kishore Chandra, Ajaykumara, Kattigehalli Math, Boopathi, Thangavel, Sushil, Satya Nand, Sabatinelli, Guido (2025): Revision of Indian Cyphochilus Waterhouse, 1867 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) with description of two new species. 03DD1656DA11FFE3ABB7B2AF884EF43D.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Cyphochilus candidus, C. septentrionalis, C. gandhii, C. satyarthii, and C. tenzingyatsoi Sabatinelli, 2020 exhibit marked external morphological similarity and share a common distribution in the northeastern Himalayas. Due to these resemblances, misidentifications among these species have been common in historical collections. Together, they form a natural group characterized by parameres that are generally slightly asymmetrical and dorsally curved (Fig. 3 A – C). Despite their external similarity, the species within this group can be reliably differentiated by the morphology of the parameres. Notably, the left paramere of C. candidus bears a flat spur, a diagnostic feature absent in the remaining members of the group. In some older collections, specimens of C. candidus were labeled as C. sylhetinus Brenske; however, this name has never been formally published and is thus considered a nomen nudum.	en	Sreedevi, Kolla, Sahoo, Kishore Chandra, Ajaykumara, Kattigehalli Math, Boopathi, Thangavel, Sushil, Satya Nand, Sabatinelli, Guido (2025): Revision of Indian Cyphochilus Waterhouse, 1867 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) with description of two new species. 03DD1656DA16FFE0ABB7B2838B9DF0B1.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Cyphochilus gandhii can be readily distinguished from all other congeners by its relatively large body size, the absence of elevated elytral striae, the presence of a prominently elongated mesosternal process, and the unique morphology of its parameres. It is most similar to C. tenzingyatsoi, but differs notably in having a longer antennal club — surpassing the combined length of antennomeres 2 – 7 — and a convex, pointed apex of the right paramere (cf. Figs 8 vs. 27). Historical misidentifications include specimens labeled by Moser as C. pygidialis Nonfried, 1893, and by Arrow as C. candidus.	en	Sreedevi, Kolla, Sahoo, Kishore Chandra, Ajaykumara, Kattigehalli Math, Boopathi, Thangavel, Sushil, Satya Nand, Sabatinelli, Guido (2025): Revision of Indian Cyphochilus Waterhouse, 1867 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) with description of two new species. 03DD1656DA14FFE1ABB7B6BE8D9CF4D1.taxon	discussion	Remarks. We examined the syntypes of Cyphochilus niveosquamosus and C. oberthueri, and confirm that these taxa are conspecific. The type locality and original description of C. manipurensis closely correspond to those of C. niveosquamosus. Although specimens labeled as C. manipurensis are present in the ISNB collection, no definitive type specimen could be located. The same applies to C. waterhousei: we examined specimens identified as such in some collections, but none could be confidently assigned to the type series, either in ZMHB or ISNB, where Brenske’s original material is expected to be housed. Therefore, we propose the synonymy of C. manipurensis and C. waterhousei with C. niveosquamosus as provisional (putative), pending further evidence.	en	Sreedevi, Kolla, Sahoo, Kishore Chandra, Ajaykumara, Kattigehalli Math, Boopathi, Thangavel, Sushil, Satya Nand, Sabatinelli, Guido (2025): Revision of Indian Cyphochilus Waterhouse, 1867 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) with description of two new species. 03DD1656DA14FFE1ABB7B32E8AB1F692.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Cyphochilus satyarthii, C. candidus, C. septentrionalis, C. gandhii, and C. tenzingyatsoi occur in northeastern India. These species are externally very similar, which has historically led to frequent misidentifications. Cyphochilus satyarthii can be reliably distinguished by the morphology of its parameres: the left paramere is unarmed, whereas the right paramere bears an externally directed spur.	en	Sreedevi, Kolla, Sahoo, Kishore Chandra, Ajaykumara, Kattigehalli Math, Boopathi, Thangavel, Sushil, Satya Nand, Sabatinelli, Guido (2025): Revision of Indian Cyphochilus Waterhouse, 1867 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) with description of two new species. 03DD1656DA19FFEDABB7B6BE8DF3F475.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Cyphochilus septentrionalis was considered a smaller form and junior synonym of C. candidus (Dalla Torre 1912; Bezděk 2016). However, examination of the type specimens by Sabatinelli (2020 a) confirmed that C. septentrionalis is a distinct species, with C. pygidialis and C. pygidialis angeri recognized as its junior synonyms. The species is readily distinguished by the unique morphology of its parameres, which bear two ventral spikes — a reliable diagnostic character that separates it from the closely related C. candidus, C. gandhii, and C. tenzingyatsoi. In some older museum collections, specimens of C. septentrionalis were misidentified as C. assamensis Brenske; however, this name has never been formally published and is therefore considered a nomen nudum.	en	Sreedevi, Kolla, Sahoo, Kishore Chandra, Ajaykumara, Kattigehalli Math, Boopathi, Thangavel, Sushil, Satya Nand, Sabatinelli, Guido (2025): Revision of Indian Cyphochilus Waterhouse, 1867 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) with description of two new species. 03DD1656DA1FFFE8ABB7B2D98B8DF179.taxon	description	Description of the holotype ♂. Body: length 21.7 mm, width across humeri 9.9 mm, greatest body width 12.1 mm, located at the midpoint of the elytra. Integuments dark brown to black; surface uniformly clothed with a mixture of grey and silver-white scales. Legs, antennae, maxillary and labial palpi, labrum, and clypeus testaceous. Head: clypeal width-to-length ratio (CW / L): 2.9. Anterior margin of clypeus subtrapezoidal; lateral margins slightly oblique and divergent posteriorly. Clypeus and frons covered with narrow, oblong, yellowish scales, which are denser along the lateral margins of the frons. Frons large, rendering the eyes relatively small (interocular ratio, F / O: 5.9). A distinct V-shaped median concavity is present on the frons, demarcated by a differential arrangement of scales along its edges, extending from the fronto-clypeal suture to mid-length of the frons. Antennal club distinctly longer than antennomeres 2 – 7 combined (A 2 – 7 / CL: 0.89). Pronotum: transverse (PnW / L: 2.4), convex, widest at the middle. Apical angles acute and protuberant; basal lateral margins curved inward; basal angles broadly obtuse. Surface densely covered with narrow, oblong, grey scales medially and yellowish scales along the lateral margins. Elytra: smooth, lacking elevated striae. Dorsal surface uniformly covered with oval, greyish to silver-white scales. Thoracic sterna: bearing yellowish, long setae and a medium to sparse distribution of small, oval scales. Mesosternal process slender and elongate distinctly produced anteriorly (MstL: 1.65 mm). Abdomen: sternites with sparse, small, oval white scales medially and densely clothed with grey scales laterally. Pygidium uniformly covered with dense, slender, long scales, intermixed grey and yellowish in colour. Legs: foretibiae tridentate apical tooth prominent and longer than the subapical tooth; basal tooth reduced, appearing as a small, angular emargination. Integuments dark brown; surface covered with off-white, oval, adpressed scales, which are densely aggregated along the margins of the clypeus, frons, pronotum, elytra, and throughout the pygidium. Head: clypeus with an anterior margin more or less trapezoidal, lateral margins convex and diverging posteriorly. Frons broad, making the eyes relatively small (F / O: 3.7). Posterior portion of the clypeus and anterior portion of the frons exhibit a slight median concavity. Antennal club longer than antennomeres 2 – 7 (A 2 – 7 / CL: 0.6). Pronotum: transverse (PnW / L: 2.1), moderately convex, widest at the middle. Apical angles acute and slightly protuberant. Lateral margins convex, with basal lateral margins curved inward and basal angles obtuse. Elytra: smooth, lacking elevated striae, except for the sutural interstria. Thoracic sterna: covered with off-white hair and scales. Prosternum and metasternum have relatively dense, short hair and scales. Mesosternum bears dense, long hair and sparse scales, with the mid-region of the mesosternum devoid of scales. Mesosternal spur distinct, tongue-shaped, reaching the anterior margin of the mesosternum (MstL: 0.73 mm). Abdomen: sternites covered with sparsely distributed scales, which are more densely aggregated towards the lateral sides. Pygidium convex, with the apical margin broader, densely covered with scales, which are more concentrated towards the lateral and apical margins. Legs: foretibiae tridentate, with the basal tooth smaller than the apical tooth. The angle between the apical (1 st) and middle (2 nd) teeth is narrower than that between the middle (2 nd) and basal (3 rd) teeth. All legs covered with sparse scales. Tarsal claws equal and toothed. Aedeagus: asymmetric, right paramere with two apophyses overlapping each other. Apical apophysis is horn-shaped, broader at the base with a pointed, narrow tip at the apex while basal apophysis is broader throughout, with a deep curvature towards the apical region and a straight, flat apical margin. Left paramere with three apophyses: basal apophysis is narrow at the base and flattened anteriorly, with a curved margin; middle apophysis is slender, with a D-shaped terminal structure; apical apophysis is broader at the base with a narrow, curved apical tip. Right paramere displays a triangular lateral projection (Fig. 32 A – C). Variability. Body length 15.9 – 20.3 mm (mean = 17.5 mm, n = 8). 03DD1656DA1DFFE9ABB7B7478BFBF51D.taxon	diagnosis	Differential diagnosis. This species is easily distinguished from all other congeners by its large body size, non-elevated elytral striae, mesosternum with a prominent short process, and the distinctive morphology of its parameres. It is most morphologically similar to C. gandhii, but can be clearly separated by its shorter antennal club (shorter than antennomeres 2 – 7) and the concave apex of the right paramere, which features a straight apical margin (Figs. 32 vs. 8).	en	Sreedevi, Kolla, Sahoo, Kishore Chandra, Ajaykumara, Kattigehalli Math, Boopathi, Thangavel, Sushil, Satya Nand, Sabatinelli, Guido (2025): Revision of Indian Cyphochilus Waterhouse, 1867 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) with description of two new species.
