The new species is slightly similar to Austrophthiracarus willmanni Niedbała, 1987, Austrophthiracarus mutabilis Niedbała et Colloff, 1997 and Austrophthiracarus paralargus Niedbała et Penttinen, 2007 in the neotrichy of notogastral and adanal setae, shape of sensilli, length and shape of prodorsal setae and length and location of setae of femora I. Exobothridial setae vestigial. Notogaster with 15 pairs of medium length setae (c 1 <c 1 - d 1), stout covered with small spines in distal half, blunt distally. The new species is easily distinguishable by a very small distance between rostral setae. Notogaster with 15 pairs of fairly long (c 1 almost equal as distance c 1 - d 1) setae, rigid, thick, covered with small spines in distal half, not pointed distally. Setae of row c covered with stronger spines at distal end than other setae. Setae c 1 and c 3 slightly remote from anterior margin, setae c 2 far from margin. Vestigial setae f 1 posteriorly of h 1. The specimens from Goonmirk have the same characters as the holotype, but the notogastral setae are longer than in specimens from Tasmania (Niedbała 2006). Setae c 1 are slightly more remote from anterior margin. Furthermore some specimens have more notogastral setae (19 or 20) and more adanal setae (six pairs) (Fig. 8 B).
