Pterothorax (Figs. 7A–B, 12G–I, 21) pale blue, except a wide longitudinal black band with metallic luster in mesepisternum and mesepimeron, mts black and PST yellow with six black dots (as in Fig. 7C). Genital ligula rectangular, internal fold width more than 1/3 of S2, surface entire (Fig. 9E), reaching anterior fold of S2 (Fig. 9F). Male cerci long, with strong basal tooth projected distally at 45°; edge of medial portion straight without denticles; primary curvature type II (Fig. 11A); secondary curvature type I (Fig. 11B). Paraprocts robust, apophyses less than 1/3 of the cerci length, apices curved (Fig. 11B). Basal plate with posterior and ventral margins split (Fig. 14C).

Remarks: This species is distributed in the northern Andes, and ranges from Peru, Ecuador to Venezuela (De Marmels 1988; Hoffman 2009; Mauffray & Tennessen 2019). In Colombia, it occurs along the western slopes of the Cordillera Oriental, in the Magdalena River valley, and the Oriental savannas (Fig. 17). This species has been closely related to L. henshawi (Navás, 1934) and further comments are given under that species.

Habitat and biology: Adults are found in small temporary ponds originated by rainwater or seepage from pipes, usually with muddy bottoms and small fragments of shrubs and grasses. Regarding the reproductive behavior, a pair of L. apollinaris was observed copulating perched on emergent vegetation, approximately one meter above the pond at midday on a cloudy day (Fig. 19). The entire copulation process lasts about five minutes. Once copulation is complete, the male releases the female, and the oviposition process begins on the stem of the grasses (pers. obs.).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D88059FF55FF838FA17F7463945428	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. It was described by Calvert (1907), based on two males from separate localities: San Juan, Costa Rica (type locality) and Santa Fé de Bogotá, Colombia. Ris (1918) reported a second record in Colombia from Pandi, Cundinamarca. Navás (1934) emphasized the similarity in cerci morphology between his new species L. apollinaris and L. henshawi . Kennedy (1942) proposed L. apollinaris as a synonym of L. henshawi, extending its distribution to Ecuador, and provided a comprehensive redescription of the male and the first description of the female. Rácenis (1958) and later, De Marmels (1988), extended its distribution into the northeastern Andes from Venezuela.

Donnelly (1996), by comparison of material from distinct localities along their known distribution, revised the status of both species in detail. Finding differences in coloration patterns, as well as in morphology of cerci and male posterior lobe of prothorax, he concluded that both are valid species. Therefore, the distribution of L. henshawi is now restricted to Costa Rica, while L. apollinaris is found throughout the Andes, from northern Peru to Venezuela.

In Colombia, Urrutia (2005) reported L. henshawi for Valle del Cauca Department. Pérez-Gutiérrez & Palacino-Rodriguez (2011), based on this record, included it in the checklist of Odonata from Colombia. During the visit to MUSENUV, CCMP examined the material identified as L. henshawi and reidentified it as L. apollinaris . Based on this result, we exclude this species from Colombia.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D88059FF5DFF858FA1780864CB5004	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Male teneral pterothorax ochre, black pattern less defined, particularly pectum with a couple of black ovoid dots adjacent to the metathoracic suture and two subtriangular black spots on metepisternum (Fig. 8 G’–I’). Genital ligula subrectangular; inner fold well-developed, reaching distal lobe of anterior lobe of distal segment (Fig. 9 O–P). Cerci long, with a strong basal tooth projected distally at 45°, medial portion convex with a row of denticles, primary curvature type I, secondary curvature type I (Fig. 11 M–N). Lateral valves of the ovipositor with a row of small denticles that increase in size from the base to the apex; dorsal side of basal plate ends in an acute spine (Fig. 14G).

Remarks: this is the smallest neotropical Lestidae (total length <32 mm). Despite its wide distribution, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Surinam, known localities are scattered (Lozano 2021). In Colombia, this species was recorded in few localities from the Amazon and the Orinoco regions (Fig. 18). Two color forms were observed in males: one black and blue (Fig. 8G–I), and other ochre, similar to female coloration (Fig. 8 G’–I’). These striking variations in coloration may be attributed to ontogenetic changes (mature vs teneral) or postmortem effects.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D88059FF63FFBA8FA17C7066F6568C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Navás (1924, p. 11) described Lestes pallidus, based on a single specimen collected in the municipality of Choachí, Cundinamarca department. Navás’s description is incomplete but includes schematic illustrations of male cerci and pterostigma. Furthermore, Navás made the following observation: “Un ejemplar bastante incompleto y al parecer no completamente adulto existente en mi colección, que no he podido referir a ninguna otra especie, distinguiéndose de las afines por su tamaño, forma de los cercos, color del abdomen y del estigma, etc [Sic]” “A rather incomplete and apparently not fully adult specimen in my collection, which I have not been able to refer to any other species, distinguished from related species by size, shape of the cerci, color of the abdomen and stigma, etc.”.

In 1930, Navás received a warning from the American odonatologist Edward Bruce Williamson that this name had already been used in Rambur (1842) for an African species, Lestes pallida . To avoid synonymies, Navas’s replaced the scientific name of his species as L. sternalis “debido a los dibujos de los esternitos torácicos[Sic]” “because of the drawings of the thoracic sternites” (Navás 1930).

Like many other species described by Navás, his descriptions have received much criticism for their incompleteness and schematic drawings (Donnelly 1996). Unfortunately, most of his type material was destroyed or lost during the civil war in Spain, leaving many species without primary types for future comparisons (Donnelly 1996).

This is true for L. sternalis . Since its original description, it has only been mentioned once in the literature, listed as a species of Colombia, specifically for the Cundinamarca department, with material deposited in ANDESE (Pérez-Gutiérrez & Palacino-Rodriguez 2011). However, during CCMP’s visit to ANDES-E, no specimens associated with this name were found. Nevertheless, the formal recognition of the species and its type locality being Choachí lead to the decision to retain it on the species list .

Situated on the western slope of the Eastern Andes Mountain range, Choachí stands at an elevation of 1900 m and is part of the buffer zone of the Chingaza National Natural Park. Bota-Sierra (2014b) highlights the significance of these areas for Odonata diversity, where new species have been discovered and new records documented, including descriptions of new species and new reports for the country. However, no comprehensive inventory of the area is available, with only a few records in the literature (see Navás 1924, p. 12; von Ellenrieder & Garrison 2008, p. 17). As a result, it is recommended to conduct future expeditions in the type locality to search for this species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03D88059FF62FFBB8FA17E8C632B55B8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
