03E7F45CFF9CE41774BCFC8443AEB8F6.taxon	description	This species was described on the basis of material received from E. Revelière, which was collected in the surroundings of Alger (cfr. Jordan 1864). Among Jordan’s material at MPU, one sheet is found which fits the collection data in the protologue. It includes three fragments whose morphological features match the original description. However, those samples were gathered at Birmandreis (currently Bir-Mourad-Raïs) close to Alger (Algeria), a site not explicitly cited by Jordan in the protologue. The voucher bears several labels. One of them apparently includes Revelière’s original information: “ 21. Biscutella apula L. / Env. d’Alger: Birmandreis. / 16 avril 1862. ”; it is also annotated “ algeriensis ” (to replace “ apula ”) and “ Mr Revelière ” at the bottom, both in Jordan’s handwriting. The second label is also in Jordan’s handwriting and includes “ Biscutella algeriensis Jord. ”, together with the typewriting “ ex Herb. Al. JORDAN 187 _ ”. And more interestingly, a recent one from MPU (Herbier Général des Phanerogames) is annotated by Louise Boulangeat with the following information: “ MPU NOTULAE CRITICAE (typed) TYPE Revelière s. n. 16.04.1862. / Biscutella algeriensis Jord., Diagn, Esp. Nouv.: 318 (1864) / Nom retenu selon The Plant List: Biscutella lyrata L. ALGERIE / 27.11.2012 AUCTOR: Louise Boulangeat (typed) ”. Other information includes a xerocopy of the original description, an additional label showing “ HERBIER JORDAN ”, and the bar code number of MPU. According to McNeill (2014) we designate this sheet as lectotype of B. algeriensis, since we cannot be sure that it was the only material studied by Jordan. In fact, Jordan only mentioned it was collected “ aux environs d’Alger ”, making no direct reference to Birmandreis, the locality mentioned on Revelière’s original label. Otherwise, it would be regarded as holotype. In recent times, B. algeriensis has usually been considered a synonym in B. lyrata Linnaeus (1771: 254) (cfr. Greuter et al. 1986, Le Floc’h et al. 2010, Marhold 2011), or also a variety of B. didyma Linnaeus (1753: 653) subsp. lyrata (L.) Nyman (1878: 59) (cfr. Battandier & Trabut 1888, Jahandiez & Maire 1932, Maire 1967, Pottier-Alapetite 1979). Sometimes, it was also treated as synonym of B. didyma var. raphanifolia Cosson (1887: 287) (incl. B. lyrata L.), non B. raphanifolia Poiret (1789: 198), a plant that Cosson (1887) treated as different from his B. radicata Coss. & Durieu (in Cosson 1873 b: 224), a synonym of B. raphanifolia Poir.	en	Vicente, Alicia, Alonso, Ángeles, Thiébaut, Mélanie, Crespo, Manuel B. 03E7F45CFF9FE41574BCFF7C42C2BC34.taxon	description	In the protologue, Jordan (1864) referred this new species as “ espèce publiée sous le nom de B. apula L., au nº 9 des Frag. flor. algeriensis exsicc. de M. Choulette, et récoltée aux environs de Constantine ”, though no concrete specimen was mentioned. Herbarium material belonging to this exiccatum has been found at MPU, K, LY, P and W, they all being syntypes (Art. 9.5 Ex 3, ICN) because none is clearly marked as holotype nor bears the indication “ sp. nov. ” or equivalent. The specimen LY- 0003809! (Fig. 1) is the only extant in Jordan’s personal herbarium. It bears the original label of Choulette’s exsiccatum (see above), and a small piece of paper showing “ B. choulletti Jord ” [sic] in Jordan’s handwriting. However, no certainty exists to consider that this specimen was the only material he studied prior to publication of the new species. Therefore, as the single fragment on that sheet matches perfectly Jordan’s description, according to suggestions by McNeill (2014) it is selected here as lectotype of B. choulettei. All other vouchers belonging to this exiccatum number (K!, LY- 0004206 [digital photo!], LY- 0004216 [digital photo!], MPU- 008638 [digital photo!], MPU- 008639 [digital photo!], MPU- 008640 [digital photo!], MPU- 008641 [digital photo!], MPU- 008642 [digital photo!], P- 04631632!, P- 04632009!, P- 05438288!, P- 05438293!, P- 05438737!, P- 05438858!, W- 0056839! and W- 0056840!) must be considered isolectotypes. After Jordan’s publication, B. choulettei has usually been considered as synonym of B. didyma L. subsp. apula Nyman (1878: 59) (cfr. Greuter et al. 1986, Marhold 2011, The Plant List 2013), or at varietal rank in B. didyma subsp. apula (cfr. Maire 1967) or B. didyma subsp. lyrata (L.) Nyman (cfr. Battandier & Trabut 1888, Jahandiez & Maire 1934). As in the previous case, it was also included in synonymy of B. didyma var. raphanifolia Coss. (non B. raphanifolia Poir., et incl. B. lyrata) (cfr. Cosson 1887).	en	Vicente, Alicia, Alonso, Ángeles, Thiébaut, Mélanie, Crespo, Manuel B. 03E7F45CFF9EE41574BCFCBE4189B9D4.taxon	description	In the protologue of B. mauritanica, no specific material was mentioned by Jordan (1864). However, it was said to grow “ in arvis regionis mauritanicae; Batna; etc. ”, this latter being the only precise locality he cited. No other collection data were mentioned. He also included “ B. auriculata DESF. Flor. atl. 2, p. 73 ” in synonymy, but no concrete sites neither herbarium material were mentioned in the description of Desfontaines (1798: 73). No vouchers of B. auriculata Linneaus (1753: 652) appear to exist at P-Desf (“ Flora Atlantica herbarium ”) (S. Gerbault pers. comm.). However, contrarily to Raffaelli (1992), a sheet (Fig. 2) has been found in Jordan’s herbarium at LY, which includes two plants corresponding to two different gatherings, both labelled B. mauritanica in Jordan’s handwriting. They were collected prior to publication of the species name and their morphological characters match the protologue. The specimen on the left side of the sheet LY- 0003909! was collected in Oran (Algeria) in 1852, whereas the one on the right was collected in Batna (Algeria) in 1858. According to Art. 40 Note 2 of the ICN, “ mere citation of a locality does not constitute mention of a single specimen or gathering. Concrete reference to some detail relating to the actual type, such as the collector’s name or collecting number or date, is required. ” Therefore, both cited specimens cannot be considered syntypes but original material, and the one from Batna is selected here as lectotype of B. mauritanica.	en	Vicente, Alicia, Alonso, Ángeles, Thiébaut, Mélanie, Crespo, Manuel B.
