03F587B21209AD4283A6C3E516FCB20F.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Females of this species are easily recognizable by the triangular excision of the apical margin of the clypeus and the brownish erect setae that form tufts on the lateral sulci of T 6. Within the subgenus, these two characteristics are found only in females of this species. Males of C. agilis can be distinguished from all the other C. (Rhinocoelioxys) by the shape of the apical margin of S 4. Besides, the area which in other species forms a hypostomal concavity is flat and completely covered by erect white hairs while in other species of the subgenus the concavity is glabrous at least posteriorly.	en	Filho, Léo Correia Da Rocha, Packer, Laurence (2015): Revision of the Neotropical subgenera Coelioxys (Platycoelioxys) Mitchell and C. 03F587B2120DAD5F83A6C4931175B196.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. The combination of mandible not unusually flattened, clypeus with an apicomedial tuberculate process, mesoscutellum with a posteromedian process and apical margin of S 5 with a fringe of long brown setae is sufficient to separate females of this species from all others except C. paraguayensis. Coelioxys barbata can be differentiated from the latter species by the strongly swollen, shiny and sparsely punctate ocellar area (interspaces> twice puncture diameters) versus weakly swollen and dull ocellar area with interspaces less than a puncture diameter. Additionally, C. barbata has the apical margin of S 5 entire versus emarginate in C. paraguayensis. For males the combination of hypostomal concavity with a larger patch of short hairs, mesoscutellum triangular and lacking a longitudinal median ridge and T 1 red across entire width is enough to separate them from all the other species in the subgenus but C. paraguayensis. However, as also found in females, the strongly swollen and shiny ocellar area contrast with the nearly flat and densely punctate ocellar area in C. paraguayensis males.	en	Filho, Léo Correia Da Rocha, Packer, Laurence (2015): Revision of the Neotropical subgenera Coelioxys (Platycoelioxys) Mitchell and C. Cockerell (1923) stated Coelioxys rostrata Friese (= C. paraguayensis) to be a parasite of Megachile stomatura based on a female collected in Guyana in abandoned borings in timber where the female host was nesting. However, judging from the distribution of C. paraguayensis (Fig. 10) and the data on the label from a female from BMNH (“ Inhabiting, desused [sic] (= disused) borings, in timber ”) this record likely refers to C. barbata. 03F587B21217AD5483A6C68D1658B35A.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Females can be differentiated from all others in the subgenus by the unique horseshoe-shaped clypeus, which is deeply bilobed apically with the two lobes flat, parallel and densely covered with short, thick brown setae apically. In some females of C. zapoteca the clypeus is also strongly bilobed but the lobes are thick and divergent, never parallel and flat as in C. nasidens. For males, the following character state combination is sufficient for separation from all other species in the subgenus except C. clypearis: hypostomal concavity almost bare but with a single row of white hairs at its dorsal carinate margin, mesoscutellum never triangular or subtriangular, dorsal processes of T 6 broad and rounded and apical margin of S 5 emarginate. Coelioxys nasidens males are very similar to those of C. clypearis but can be distinguished most easily by the S 5 disc strongly canaliculate, the dark brown coloration of T 1, the base of S 8 broadly acute.	en	Filho, Léo Correia Da Rocha, Packer, Laurence (2015): Revision of the Neotropical subgenera Coelioxys (Platycoelioxys) Mitchell and C. 03F587B2121BAD5083A6C56D1656B4D3.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. The combination of mandible not unusually flattened, clypeus with an apicomedial tuberculate process, mesoscutellum with a posteromedian process and apical margin of S 5 with a fringe of long brown setae is sufficient to separate females of this species from all others except. C. barbata from which it can be differentiated by its weakly swollen, dull and densely punctate ocellar region (strong swollen, shiny and sparsely punctate ocellar region in C. barbata). It also has an emarginate apical margin to S 5, which is entire in C. barbata. Males differ from all the other in the subgenus by the following character combination: Hypostomal concavity with a larger patch of short hairs, mesoscutellum triangular and lacking a longitudinal median ridge and T 1 red across entire width. The ocellar area in C. paraguayensis males, as in females, contrasts with the shiny, sparsely punctate and strongly swollen ocellar area in C. barbata males. Additionally, C. paraguayensis ranges from Northern Brazil to North Argentina whereas C. barbata occurs only in northern South America, from French Guiana to Panama.	en	Filho, Léo Correia Da Rocha, Packer, Laurence (2015): Revision of the Neotropical subgenera Coelioxys (Platycoelioxys) Mitchell and C. 03F587B2121BAD5083A6C56D1656B4D3.taxon	discussion	Comments. Schrottky’s (1909) type specimen of C. paraguayensis is apparently lost (Moure et al., 2012). However, from the description of the female of C. paraguayensis from Asunción, Paraguay it is clear that we have the same species as Schrottky. Distinctive characteristics are the tuberculate prominence of the clypeus and the bipartite apex of S 5 with its fringe of dark hairs. Additional characters supporting our designation include the shape of the mesoscutellum, T 6 and S 6. All of these characteristics are the name as found in C. rostrata which is synonymized herein with C. paraguayensis. Floral Records. According to the label data, some females were collected on the flowers of Vitex negundo L. (Lamiaceae). Host Records. Unknown. Geographical Distribution. 03F587B2121DAD6783A6C0A516A9B20F.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Females of C. zapoteca are very distinctive mainly due to the thickened and produced clypeus apically and the extreme variation of its apex which varies from straight to strongly bilobed. In the female the apical margin of clypeus is emarginate with two divergent, thick, pointed lobes. Other species in the subgenus have a small triangular excision medially on the apical margin of the clypeus (C. agilis), an apicomedial tuberculate process (C. barbata and C. paraguayensis), the apical margin weakly emarginate (C. clypearis), horseshoe-shaped (C. nasidens) or simple, nearly truncate (C. platygnatha). Another diagnostic character of the females is the fringe composed of short brown setae at the apex of S 5, a characteristic also found in C. platygnatha but this species can be differentiated from C. zapoteca by the strongly flattened dorsoventrally mandibles. Other species of the subgenus S 5 has no fringe (C. agilis, C. clypearis and C. nasidens) or a fringe composed of long brownish setae (C. barbata and C. paraguayensis). Males can be differentiated from the other species by the hypostomal concavity, which is hirsute only anteriorly and by the shape of the mesoscutellum, with a somewhat impunctate dorso-median ridge. In other species the hypostomal concavity is hirsute throughout (C. agilis), almost bare but with a single row of white hairs at its dorsal carinate margin (C. clypearis and C. nasidens) or hirsute anteriorly as in C. zapoteca but the mesoscutellum lacks a dorso-median ridge (C. barbata and C. paraguayensis).	en	Filho, Léo Correia Da Rocha, Packer, Laurence (2015): Revision of the Neotropical subgenera Coelioxys (Platycoelioxys) Mitchell and C. 03F587B2121DAD6783A6C0A516A9B20F.taxon	discussion	Comments. Moure (1951) redescribed the female of this species (as C. clypeata) and a detailed redescription of both sexes was provided by Mitchell (1973). This species is the most widely distributed of the subgenus, ranging from San Luis Potosí State in Mexico to Santa Fé Department, Argentina. The clypeus in females is thickened and produced apically and the apical margin can be straight, nearly truncate, emarginate, forming two rounded lobes or even strongly bilobed, with two pointed thick lobes. This variation led some taxonomists to describe different species based on this character: C. clypeata recognized by Smith (1879) by its bilobed clypeus, and C. bilobata and its subspecies C. bilobata schenki, both described by Friese (1921). Holmberg (1918) described the species C. mesopotamica based on a male and stressed the deeply bilobed clypeus of this specimen. As Coelioxys males have no modifications of the clypeus and considering Holmberg’s description, we conclude that this holotype, which seems to no longer exist, was actually a composite specimen, with a female head attached to a male body. A female labeled by Holmberg as C. mesopotamica was found by A. Roig-Alsina at MACN. According to him, this specimen was collected by P. Jörgensen on X- 20 - 1909, a few days later than the holotype described by Holmberg (X- 11 - 1909). The female has no head but otherwise agrees with all the characters found in C. zapoteca. The species described by Friese as C. bilobata also agrees with all the characteristics of C. zapoteca and thus is considered herein as a junior synonym, as is its subspecies C. bilobata schenki. Although usually a robust character, the shape of the apical margin of the clypeus in females of this species is remarkably variable (Fig. 14). The strongly bilobed form (Fig. 14 O) seems to be the least common, but females with an almost truncate apex or a less strongly emarginate apical margin are found throughout the species’ range. Males from Southern Mexico to Central Argentina do not exhibit any geographically delimitated variation that might be suggestive of there being more than one species. This decision is corroborated by the results of DNA barcoding: the wide range of clypeal forms of females of this species and specimens from Mexico, Costa Rica and Paraguay belong to the same sequence cluster with minimal sequence divergence (Fig. 18). In the light of the above, we consider C. clypeata, C. leucochrysea, C. angustivalva, C. blabera, C. doelloi, C. mesopotamica, C. bullaticeps, C. bilobata and the subspecies C. bilobata schenki to be junior synonyms of C. zapoteca. 03F587B2122CAD7E83A6C0A51729B7FA.taxon	discussion	Comments. Mitchell (1973) provided a detailed description of both sexes of this species (cited as C. spatuliventer). The greatly spatulate S 5 in females was highlighted by Friese (1921) when describing a female of C. alatiformis and he compared it to the Palearctic species Coelioxys (Boreocoelioxys) alata Förster, in which the S 5 is also expanded towards the apex. Subsequently, Cockerell (1927) described a female of C. spatuliventer and mentioned that this species could be nearest to C. alatiformis based on the shape of S 5. In Moure et al. (2012) catalogue and EOL (2014), C. spatuliventer is considered a junior synonym of C. alatiformis but no comment or reference is given in either. Furthermore, Ascher & Pickering (2014) do not list the name C. spatuliventer in the genus; C. alatiformis is the only species recognized in the subgenus C. (Platycoelioxys), but no formal synonymy is provided. Hence, the synonymy of C. spatuliventer with C. alatiformis is published herein. Additionally, C. pachyceps Friese is also considered a junior synonym of C. alatiformis. Floral Records. Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae), Lythrum sp. (Lythraceae) (Mitchell, 1973); Forsteronia spicata (Jacq.) G. Mey. (Apocynaceae) (data from the labels). Host Records. The only known host record is provided by Gazola & Garófalo (2009) who mentioned that Megachile neoxanthoptera nests are attacked by C. alatiformis. Geographical Distribution. Argentina (Misiones), Bolivia (Beni, La Paz), Brazil (Amapá, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Pará, São Paulo, Santa Catarina), Colombia (Arauca, Magdalena, Meta, Valle de Cauca), Costa Rica (Alajuela, Guanacaste), Guyana (Potaro-Siparuni), Mexico (Quintana-Roo, San Luís Potosí, Veracruz), Peru (Huánuco, Junín, Madre de Dios), Trinidad & Tobago (Arima, Saint George) (Fig. 21).	en	Filho, Léo Correia Da Rocha, Packer, Laurence (2015): Revision of the Neotropical subgenera Coelioxys (Platycoelioxys) Mitchell and C.
