Fore femur with moderately stout bristles; costal vein broken or weakened just beyond humeral crossvein, and a definite costal break just before apex of R1; costal vein reaching M1 vein; subcostal vein strong basally, weaker apically, curving toward and fusing with R1 far from apex, the latter somewhat thickened at its union with costal vein. Anal cell well developed; anal vein ceasing abruptly far from wing margin; last section of CuA1 usually failing to reach wing margin, its length a little more than half that of crossvein dm-cu; bm-cu crossvein absent or partially present as a stub; male genitalia large and complex, bent beneath abdomen. Female abdomen long and slender, tapering at apex slightly telescoped.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FF87C9FFF4D323D9FAFCD8FD45F945	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The male specimens fits Hennig’s (1969) description and as they were collected around 50 km far away the type locality (Avispas, Madre de Dios) of L. longiterebra, they are being considered conspecific. According to Hennig (1969), L. longiterebra differs from other species known by “the unusual length of the female ovipositor (the 7th abdominal segment): this is nearly as long as the entire rest of the abdomen, while their length does not exceed the 5th and 6th abdominal length in other species”. Only male specimens were collected using Malaise traps.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FF87C9FFF4D320D9FAF9BDFEF6F84B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. It agrees with most of the description and the figures of L. infumata described only from female specimens, but differs in the size of the yellow triangular spot on the scutum, which is shorter. Since L. infumata was described from Nicaragua, and the specimen in question is from Peru, it is quite possible that they are different species. It also appears to be close to L. xantha sp. nov., but differs in the size of the yellow triangular spot on the scutum (longer in L. xantha sp. nov.) and the coloration of the legs, in that the fore tibia of this female is entirely yellow, the mid femur is yellow with the base brown and the hind femur is mainly brown with a yellow spot medially. In L. xantha sp. nov., described only from male specimens, the fore tibia has the basal half yellow and the distal half dark brown, the mid femur is entirely yellow and the hind femur is entirely brown. There are only two species described from male and female specimens in Latheticomyia, L. lineata Wheeler and L. tricolor Wheeler, and both sexes have the same general appearance and because this specimen do not fit quite well neither discussed species above ( L. infumata and L. xantha sp. nov.) we prefer to leave it as unidentified.

Material examined. “ PERU: Cusco, 19rd km W Quincemil, Rio Araza tributary, 13°20'10"S, 70°50'57"W, 874 m, 23–31.viii.2012, Malaise, R.R.
