Unknown.

Remarks. This new species is typical member of the subgenus Diphaomyia by the characters given by the male genitalia and the cibarial armature, but with reduced wing pattern of pale spots. This Mexican species is related to two Nearctic species, Culicoides erikae Atchley & Wirth (USA: New Mexico, Utah, Arizona,) and C. footei Wirth & Jones (USA: Virginia; Ontario and Quebec south to Nebraska, Mississippi and Florida). Culicoides erikae is differs from these related species by the absence of the pale spots in the cell cua 1. Culicoides footei and C. tzotzil have a very similar pattern of pale areas in the wing, but this new species is distinguished by the pale spots straddling middle of vein M 2 (absent in C. footei) and by the absence of a pale spot lying in front of mediocubital fork, which is present in C. footei . The male genitalia is very similar except by the distomedian process of aedeagus with conspicuously serrations in C. footei, absent in C. tzotzil . At the moment no Neotropical species of this group has a reduced pattern of pale spots and the species Nearctic are included in the Culicoides haematopotus group (Atchley & Wirth 1979).

Type material. Since its original description, the type specimens had not been reviewed until recently by HH that allowed him to find several mistakes in the original description. For example, the female Allotype designated by Vargas (1955) is not conspecific with the male holotype. However, it is conspecific with C. (Beltranmyia) crepuscularis Malloch. This female is slide mounted in Canada balsam and is in a poor condition as it lacks wings, and its legs coloration does not agree with the male holotype of C. neghmei Vargas. Finally, the illustration of the holotype male paramere by Vargas (1955) does not agree with our observation of this specimen.

Based on our examination of the male holotype and paratype, we concluded that this species is very closely related to C. luglani Jones & Wirth (1958) . Specific differences are observed in relation to the femur of the hind leg. For example, C. luglani has a narrow distal pale band on the hind legs (Jones & Wirth 1958) or a prominent subapical pale band (Phillips 2022), whereas C. neghmei lacks this distal pale band. Therefore, it is likely that both species are conspecific. Given the poor condition of specimens of C. neghmei, we suggest that this species is closely related to C. luglani and that both species are likely in the Limai species group.

Material examined. Type series. HOLOTYPE. MEXICO, Puebla, Atlixco, Mexican Faune 1690 H, A. Dampf, CET (88049), slide mounted in balsam Canada; dissected specimen: head, thorax, wing and male genitalia . Paratype, same data as holotype, except CET (88051); dissected specimen: head, wing and male genitalia.

Distribution. Known only from the type locality in Guerrero, Mexico.

New Synonymy. Allotype (female) MEXICO, Puebla, Atlixco, Mexican Faune 1690 H, A. Dampf, CET (88050). This specimen is erroneously associated with the type specimens (holotype and paratype). It is conspecific with Culicoides (Beltranmyia) crepuscularis Malloch, based on characters given by antennal coeloconic sensillar pattern, legs coloration, palpus and spermatheca.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FC805BEA76FFBCC185FEFFFD3EFE78	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Our examination of the type material of Culicoides wirthomyia Vargas, represented by three slides, only allows comparison of the wing (Fig. 37) and male genitalia since the rest of the body is missing. Forattini (1957) reviewed a paratype and indicated that the specimen belongs to the genus Dasyhelea, as Dasyhelea wirthomyia (Vargas), despite that he did not indicate which of the three paratypes of the type series he examined. In the original description, Vargas (1953b) indicated that one paratype specimen was deposited in the collection of the Natural History Museum of Washington, D. C. Vargas (1960) indicated that Culicoides wirthomyia is very closely related to or identical to Culicoides jamaicensis . After the revision of the male genitalia of the three specimens of the type series of C. wirthomyia, we determined that it is conspecific with C. jamaicensis and therefore it is a junior synonym of that species.

Distribution. Forattini (1957) show the distribution in Trinidad and cites to Vargas´ record in Mexico City (Distrito Federal). Wirth (1974) assinated the Trinidad record to C. guyanensis Floch & Abonnenc. In all subsequent catalogs of the Neotropical region and part of Mexico (Wirth et al. 1988, Borkent & Spinelli, 2000, 2007, Mendez & Ibañez, 2023) no reference to this species. Phillips (2022) reassigned this species to the subgenus Haematomyidium, and indicated a broadly distribution in North America (Idaho, Montana to Nova Scotia, south to California, Utah, Florida), Mexico, Trinidad and Venezuela. We consider the record of this species in Mexico not confirmed. Acoording to Phillips (2022) this species is very similar to C. kettei Breidenbaugh & Mullens.

Specimens not available for study.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03FC805BEA65FFAEC185FB85FD9CF9DF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
