Coxa, femur, and tibia with gray pollinosity. Fore femur with rows of ventral and posterodorsal setae; fore tibia with a dorsal seta at base and a median posterior seta, fore tarsus with long and dense setae on anterior surface of first to fourth tarsomere and fourth tarsomere with a tuft of six long and strong setae reaching beyond and curving around claws and pulvilli (Fig. 11C). Mid femur with 4 posteroventral setae, 2 posterordorsal setae, and 3 anteroventral setae; mid tibia with 4 anterior setae, 2 ventral setae, and 3 median dorsal setae. Hind femur with a row of anterodorsal setae and a row of 6 ventral setae in basal half; hind tibia with a row of anterodorsal setae, a row of 4 ventral setae, a row of 5 posterodorsal setae, and 2 basal dorsal setae. Abdomen ground color black, with gray pollinosity. Color pattern on syntergite 1+2 and tergites 3–5 well-defined, each with three distinct black spots in dorsal view.

Female. Unknown.

Remarks. This species is evidently closely related to a number of species showing a similar fore tarsus chaetotaxy and abdominal pattern, which have often been separated in their own (sub) genus, Stephanodactylum Rohdendorf. Apart from the type species Miltogramma punctata Meigen, 1824 (Fig. 12B), this taxon contains an additional five species described by Rohdendorf (1930): M. alajica Rohdendorf, 1930, M. asiatica Rohdendorf, 1930, M. dzhungarica Rohdendorf, 1930, M. obscura Rohdendorf, 1930, and M. sogdiana Rohdendorf, 1930 [female only]. The fore tarsus of these species is equipped with long and dense setae on the anterior surface of one or more tarsomeres, combined with a cluster or tuft of six very long and strong setae, which emerge distally from the posterior part of tarsomere 4, reaching beyond and curving around the claws and the pulvilli (Rohdendorf 1930; K. Szpila, pers. comm.). However, in spite of the fore tarsal ornamentation being very characteristic and highly species-specific, Rohdendorf (1930) made only simple notes on this feature, and it has been documented only for M. punctata within this group of species (e.g., Séguy 1941: 273, fig. 382; Pape 1987: 28, fig. 26). The abdominal pattern with three distinct, subequal black spots on tergite 3–5 is reminiscent of that of M. asiatica and M. punctata, but these have the frontal vitta yellowish (posterior half in M. asiatica, entirely in M. punctata), while it is entirely silvery in M. szpilai sp. nov.

Type material. Protomiltogramma jaxartiana (Rohdendorf, 1927) *

(Figs 19–21)

Material examined. Xinjiang, Altay, Kalamaili— 1 ♂: 26.VI.2015, MZ leg.; 23 ♂♂, 5 ♀♀: 26‒30.VI.2015, MZ leg.; 2 ♂♂: 1.VII.2015, MZ leg.

Distribution. China (Neimenggu, Xinjiang). Northwest Asia, Southwest Asia, Central Asia, Mongolia, East Asia.

Remarks. Protomiltogramma jaxartiana differs from all congeners by its abdominal pattern of extensive gray microtomentum with tergites 3 and 4 having a distinct median black spot and a broad, black hind margin laterally, and tergite 5 with gray microtomentum in at least anterior half (Fig. 19). The other species of Protomiltogramma Townsend known from China — P. fasciata (Meigen, 1824), P. yunnanica (Chao & Zhang, 1988), and P. yunnanensis (Fan, 1981) —as well as those known from Sri Lanka (2 spp.; Verves 1979), Thailand (2 spp.; Kurahashi & Chaiwong 2007), Malaysia (2 spp.; Kurahashi & Leh 2008), New Caledonia (Johnston et al. 2019), and the easternmost Palaearctic (1 sp.; Rohdendorf 1935; Kurahashi & Kakinuma 2015; Kurahashi et al. 2017) have an abdominal pattern without a well-defined median spot (e.g., Zhang et al. 2015, fig. 15A, F; Verves & Khrokalo 2020b, fig. 12D–E) and they can hardly be confused with P. jaxartiana . We compared the specimens from Kalamaili with a male from Iran (North Khorasan, Sevaldi, 37°43’07’’N 57°45’44’’E, 21.VI.2016, Iran Expedition III, deposited in NCUT), and the Kalamaili material presents an overall slightly paler microtomentum on the thorax and a larger distance from the tip of postpedical to the vibrissa. The length of the postpedical is often of considerable diagnostic value in Protomiltogramma, but male terminalia of our material (Fig. 18) showed a close match with those of P. jaxartiana illustrated by Verves (1990: 529, fig. 8δ) as well as with the terminalia of the male from Iran (K. Szpila leg.) (Fig. 20).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/038087AF82265D25FF12FBC4722EF885	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. The new species is named after its type locality, the Chinese province Xinjiang, Kalamaili Mountain Ungulate Nature Reserve (abbreviated as “Kashan”).

Distribution. China (Xinjiang).

Remarks. The genus Asiosarcophila Rohdendorf & Verves, 1978 was established with the single species Asiosarcophila kaszabi Rohdendorf & Verves, 1978 . The authors suggested a sister-group relationship with Sarcophila Rondani, 1856, while Pape (1998) suggested a sister-group relationship with Wohlfahrtia Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889, although both hypotheses were provided without detailing any synapomorphies. Phylotranscriptomic data have recently been found to support Asiosarcophila as a sister-taxon of Sarcophila (Yan et al. 2020) . Asiosarcophila kashanensis sp. nov. is here assessed to be a member of the genus Asiosarcophila, argued from the row of short setae along the anterior margin of the surstylus. This setal configuration is shared by A. kashanensis and A. kaszabi and is to our knowledge not found in any other species in the subfamily. The slender lateral sclerotizations of the distiphallic, curved at their base and projecting more or less perpendicular to the phallic tube, may be a synapomorphy with the genus Sarcophila . The new species can be distinguished from A. kaszabi by pregonite distinctly curved, postgonite hook-shaped distally, and phallus elongate and slender and with the paired lateral sclerotizations projecting almost perpendicular to the phallic tube (compare Fig. 36A, C with Fig. 36B, D).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/038087AF82145D1EFF12FA3073FCFDB5	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
