Paratypes, same labels as holotype: 10 males (2 MNRJ, 1 OUMNH), 18 females (1 MNRJ, 1 OUMNH); 5.ii.1972, 4 females; 8–10mls. NW Sa da Bandeira, 27–29.iii.1972, 5 females (1 MNRJ); (A28) c. 6600’/ 14 50’S, 13 25’E, 4–5.iii.1972, 1 male, 2 females.</p><p>Diagnosis. Ground-colour brown to dark brown, very shiny, with some grey pollinosity especially on pleura (Fig. 1); scutum when viewed from the front with sparse grey pollinosity on postpronotum and a median vitta before the suture, more or less covering the acrostichals; arista long; thorax with very few ground-setulae; dorsocentrals 1+3, the first three hair-like and the last (prescutellar) long and well-developed; the posterodorsal preapical seta on fore tibia, as long as the median posterior seta; sternite 5 “U”shaped; surstylus curved (not visible in dorsal view) with 2 spines at apex; distiphallus large and membranous.</p><p>Description. Ground-colour brown to dark brown, very shiny, with some grey pollinosity especially on pleura (Fig. 1); scutum when viewed from the front with sparse grey pollinosity on postpronotum and a median vitta before the suture, more or less covering the acrostichals; head with frontal vitta brown to dark brown (some males with lunule light brown); ocellar triangle and fronto-orbital plate shiny brown; face, parafacial and gena grey pollinose; antenna dark brown, pedicel with grey pollinosity; arista and palpus brown; posterior part of head grey pollinose; scutum and scutellum entirely brown, shiny; notopleuron and all pleura grey dusted; calypters white; haltere pale yellow; wing clear; legs brown, shiny; abdomen brown, shiny, with grey pollinosity on syntergite 1+2 laterally and on epandrium.</p><p>Male. Body length: 2.1–2.3 mm; wing length: 2.2–2.4 mm.</p><p>Head. Eye bare; frons at vertex about one-third of head-width; frontal row with 4 pairs of fine setae, and 1 pair of reclinate orbitals; inner vertical and ocellar setae long and fine, similar in size; outer vertical very long and fine; antenna inserted at mid-level of eye, with postpedicel about 2.4–2.7 times the length of pedicel; arista long, with short, fine hairs on basal third; gena very narrow; palpus filiform.</p><p>Thorax. With very few ground-setulae; acrostichal setulae very fine, in 2 rows, prescutellar pair not differentiated; dorsocentrals 1+3, the first three hair-like and the last (prescutellar) long and well-developed; postpronotum with fine hairs, without differentiated setae; 1 presutural and no postsutural intra-alar, 1 postsutural supra-alar; 1 postalar; prealar absent; notopleuron with 2 setae, similar in size; anepisternum with a series of 4 setae, the anterior and the posterior ones long; katepisternals 1+1+1, arranged in an equilateral triangle. Scutellum with 1 long basal and 1 long apical pair of setae and with fine hairs on disc.</p><p>Legs. Fore femur with a complete row of posterodorsal setae and 4 long, well-spaced posteroventral hairs on basal and middle thirds; fore tibia with a long posterior median seta, dorsal and posterodorsal preapicals, the latter as long as the median posterior seta, and 1 preapical posteroventral inserted basad relative to the other two; mid femur with 2 long anterior setae on middle third, 4 long well-spaced posteroventral hairs on basal and middle thirds and 2 posterior preapicals; mid tibia with 1 long median anterior and posterior setae, preapicals on anteroventral and posteroventral surfaces and 1 ventral apical; hind femur with an anterodorsal row of about 5 well-spaced setae and an anteroventral row with about 4 well-spaced setae; hind tibia with 1 long anterior and 1 longer posterodorsal above middle, 1 anterodorsal and one posterodorsal on apical third, the posterodorsal inserted slightly above the anterodorsal, apicals on ventral and anteroventral surfaces.</p><p>Wing. Veins bare; veins M and R4+5 parallel at wing-tip; upper calypter very short and lower one long, about 4 times the length of the upper one; haltere with the knob large.</p><p>Abdomen. Compressed ventrally; syntergite 1+2 with a row of lateral setae; tergites 3–5 each with 1 lateral pair of setae; tergite 5 with two median setae inserted close to the margin of tergite 4. Sternite 1 bare. Sternite 5 “U”shaped (Fig. 4).</p><p>Terminalia. Cercal plate as in Fig. 5; surstylus curved with 2 spines at apex (Fig. 6). Aedeagal complex as in Fig. 6; distiphallus large and membranous.</p><p>Female: Body length: 2.3–2.5 mm; wing length: 2.4–2.5 mm. Similar to male.</p><p>Etymology. The specific name is from the Latin “ lucens ”, meaning “bright”, and refers to the shining general colour of the body.</p><p>Discussion. This is a very peculiar species with a characteristic colour pattern and scutal chaetotaxy. It runs in Emden’s (1940) key to the C. semifumosa -group and within this group runs to C. megalocalyptra (Emden), which is also a very peculiar species with a very well developed lower calypter that reaches to third abdominal segment in male.</p><p>Geographical distribution. Ground-colour brown with grey pollinosity; postpronotum yellow with a little grey pollinosity; legs yellow with a preapical brown ring on mid and hind femora; abdomen with brownish-grey pollinosity, syntergite 1+2 yellowish; sternite 5 large, triangular, with two concavities on apical margin (Fig. 7).</p><p>Description. (Fig. 2) Ground-colour brown with grey pollinosity; head with frontal vitta dark brown; ocellar triangle yellow pollinose; fronto-orbital plate, face, parafacial and gena grey pollinose; antenna dark brown, tip of pedicel yellow; arista brown; palpus dark yellow on basal two-thirds and brown on apical third; scutum with one median brown vitta; scutellum uniformly grey pollinose; postpronotum yellow with a little grey pollinosity; pleura somewhat yellow with grey pollinosity; calypters white; haltere yellow; wing clear; legs yellow with a preapical brown ring on mid and hind femora; tarsi brown; abdomen with brownish-grey pollinosity, syntergite 1+2 yellowish.</p><p>Male. Eye bare; frons at vertex about one-third of head-width; frontal row with 3 pairs of setae, and 1 pair of reclinate orbitals; inner and outer verticals and ocellars short and similar in size; antenna inserted at mid-level of eye, with postpedicel about 2.5 times the length of pedicel; arista with short and fine hairs along its whole length; palpus filiform.</p><p>Thorax. Acrostichal setulae in 2 rows, prescutellar pair not differentiated; dorsocentrals 1+3, all long; postpronotal 1, long; 1 presutural and 1 postsutural intra-alar, 1 postsutural supra-alar; 2 postalars; prealar absent; notopleuron with 2 setae, similar in size; anepisternum with series of 4 long setae; katepisternals 1+1+1, arranged in an equilateral triangle. Scutellum with 1 long basal and 1 long apical pair of setae.</p><p>Legs. Fore femur with 2 anterior setae on basal third and with 3–4 sparse setae on anterodorsal and posterodorsal surfaces; fore tibia with a long posterior median seta, anterodorsal, dorsal and posterodorsal preapicals, and 1 ventral apical; mid femur with 2 anterior setae on middle third, 4–5 well-spaced posteroventral and anteroventral setae on basal and middle thirds, and 2 posterior preapicals; mid tibia with 1 anteroventral and 1 median anterior, the anterior seta inserted a little below the other, with preapicals on dorsal and posterodorsal surfaces and 1 ventral apical; hind femur with an anterodorsal and an anteroventral row of well-spaced setae; hind tibia with 1 anterior and 1 posterodorsal median setae, inserted almost at the same level, 1 long submedian posterodorsal,1 anterodorsal and 1 dorsal on apical third, apicals on anteroventral and ventral surfaces.</p><p>Wing. Veins bare; veins M and R4+5 parallel at wing-tip; lower calypter about twice the length of the upper one.</p><p>Abdomen. Tergite 3 with 1 pair of lateral setae; tergites 4–5 each with a discal row of setae. Sternite 1 bare. Sternite 5 large, triangular, with two concavities on apical margin (Fig. 7).</p><p>Terminalia. Cercal plate and surstylus as in Fig. 8; cercal plate with a tuft of setae on the ventral apex. Aedeagal complex as in Fig. 9; distiphallus long and membranous.</p><p>Female: Body length: 2.6 mm; wing length: 2.6–2.7 mm. Similar to male.</p><p>Etymology. The specific name refers to the yellow colour of the postpronotal lobes, contrasting with the grey pollinose scutum.</p><p>Discussion. This species runs in Emden’s (1940) key to the C. vittata -group, and within this group to Coenosia edwardsi (Emden, 1940), but in this species the basal scutellar setae is much shorter than the apical one, and the fore femur is dark brown.</p><p>Geographical distribution. The species was described only from the holotype female. According to Zielke (1971) the species runs to C. ruwenzorica (Emden) in Emden’s (1940) key, and can be separated by having 3 rather than 5 brown vittae on scutum. The data given here have been taken from Zielke’s original description as no material has been examined. The species is not represented in the BMNH collection.</p><p>Geographical distribution. Veins bare; veins M and R4+5 parallel at wing-tip; lower calypter about twice the length of the upper one.</p><p>Abdomen. Tergite 3 with 1 lateral pair of setae; tergites 4–5 each with a marginal row of setae. Sternite 1 bare. Sternite 5 “U” shaped (Fig. 22).</p><p>Terminalia. Cercal plate as in Figs 23–24; with 2 spines and 2 submedian structures on ventral view (Fig. 24); surstylus straight, curved at apex. Aedeagal complex as in Fig. 25.</p><p>Female: Body length: 3.3 mm; wing length: 3.2 mm. Similar to male.</p><p>Etymology. The name refers to the 2 spines on the ventral surface of the cercal plate.</p><p>Discussion. C. setosa runs in Emden’s (1940) key to the C. semifumosa -group, and within this group it runs to C. semifumosa Stein, but C. setosa can be differentiated by the very peculiar male terminalia characters.</p><p>Geographical distribution. Small species (3.5 mm); scutum brown; postpronotum and notopleuron with grey pollinosity; pleura grey pollinose; abdominal segment 1+2 and base of segment 3 brownish-yellow translucent; frons black with some silver reflexions from certain angles; palpus light brown; fore coxa yellow, legs brownish-yellow, mid and hind femora with a brown mark on apical third of dorsal surface; wing infuscated; the narrowest point of fronto-facial stripe below the base of the antenna; frons widened towards vertex; arista almost bare; scutellum with both pairs of setae present and long, and with setulae on disc; anterior katepisternal short, posterior one long; haltere yellow; lower calypter about 2.5 times as long as upper one; fore tibia with a very long posteroventral seta; hind tibia with one anterior and one anterodorsal inserted at almost the same level, the anterior one shorter; sternite 5 with 4 long setae on each inner margin (Fig. 26).</p><p>Male terminalia.
